Importance of Attendance ‘Pupils with (next to) no absence are three times more likely to succeed at secondary school’ DfE Report called, ‘The Link Between Absence and Attainment’ (2016) Missing just ONE LESSON could be the difference between your child being able to master a skill or not. Please come and talk to us if you are struggling to ensure that your child attends school every day. There is a proven direct link between poor attendance during a child’s time at primary school, how well they do at secondary school and then what this then does for their future job prospects .
Punctuality, drop off and pick up ● Please ensure your child is brought to school on time by at least 8.55 each day. Reading sessions start very promptly in each morning and if your child is late it will instantly have an impact on their learning time ● If you are late, please take your child round to the office to be signed in. ● We kindly ask that children do not ride scooters or bikes on site , particularly outside the classrooms when children are being dropped off and collected at the end of the day ● If a sibling is picking up your child they must be 16 years or over. ● If your child is not being picked up by their parents/guardians, their teacher must be informed who is picking up your child at drop off that morning
Uniform We ask that every child wears a school uniform so that we can foster a sense of community and equality. Please ensure that your child has the correct uniform below ● A white polo shirt (with or without the school logo) ● A blue jumper or cardigan with the school logo. ● Black/grey trousers or skirts/pinafore dresses. ● Blue summer dresses. ● Black/grey/blue or white socks/tights. ● Black school shoes. These should be plain, flat and have no logos. Please note, NO TRAINERS ● Hair accessories must be SMALL and in SCHOOL COLOURS only. ● No jewellery is permitted, other than plain, single stud earrings. ● No nail varnish or transfer tattoos should be worn ● PE Kits will be the school t-shirt, blue/black shorts and blue/black track suits (winter) and black trainers/plimsolls. Kits should be kept in the school PE bag and be available at all times.
Water and snacks Snacks Infant children are provided with free fruit to eat at break time every day. If they have a particular favourite piece of fruit that you would prefer them to have, do feel free to send it in with your child. Water We give children regular opportunities to drink water in the classroom throughout the day so please send your child with a separate water bottle to use. This must be filled with water and not squash for drinking in the classroom. This bottle needs to be separate from their packed lunch box drink as they have no access to these during the day.
School Dinners Pabulum School Meals If you wish your child to have a school dinner, you MUST book this online on parentpay. It is vital that you book your child’s meal regardless of whether you pay for school dinners or if they are free through infant universal free school meals. With the company’s new ordering system, a dinner register is no longer taken by the teacher each morning and school dinner numbers are prepared according to the number of online bookings. If you have any problems with this booking system, please let the office know.
Communication Excellent communication between school and home is key We will always be available to talk to you at the end of the school day when you come to collect your child. If you would like to meet with us for longer, then please visit the school office to book a suitable time for after school. You can also request that we telephone you. The school publishes its newsletter once a fortnight . We also have parent evenings twice a year and will be inviting you to attend events such as our exciting school shows! We will let you know about these events by letter. All letters are sent via email so please ensure we have the correct address. We also have a texting service . So please make sure we have the correct mobile number for you.
Homework ● We ask that you aim to read with your child five times a week ● A homework sheet will be sent home each Friday with key maths skills to practise and a set of 8 spellings to practice on a handwriting sheet . These need to be handed in by Thursday on the following week. ● Mymaths homework & Times tables Rockstars will be set each week for children who wish to complete additional mathematics activities and have access to a computer at home .
Homework If you only have time for one thing…… then please read!!!!
Homework- reading We ask that you aim to read with your child five times a week so please remember to keep their reading diaries signed. Reading diaries need to be brought into school every day and handed in on a Friday so that the number of days your child has read at home can be counted. Each day your child reads at home counts towards them receiving their new ‘Reading Diploma’ awards! .
End of year expectations Reading
Curriculum and Assessment We love making learning exciting! So, we work very hard to make sure that our topics are filled with memorable moments. Our current topic is called: ‘Dragons and Dinosaurs’ Every topic starts with a Stunning Start . We then have a Marvellous Middle and finish with an inspiring Fabulous Finish. Our Stunning Start was: Medieval knight visit! Our Marvellous Middle will be: Paeleontologist Day where children will go back in time and work together to piece together dinosaur bones Our Fabulous Finish will be: Puppet Show
Curriculum and Assessment The National Curriculum lays out in detail the skills expectations for each year group. In order to meet these requirements we teach the following: • 5 reading lessons a week • 5 writing lessons a week • 5 maths lessons a week (maths mastery) • Daily maths fluency (as part of early morning skills) • Daily handwriting • Daily spelling practise • Science once a week • RE once a week • PSHE once a week • Computing once a week • PE twice a week (one competitive sports and the other gym/dance) • Music and/or singing once a week • Art, Design Technology, history or geography once a week …..and try to make it fun!!!!
Curriculum and Assessment In line with the requirements made with the 2014 revision to the National Curriculum we no longer assign national curriculum levels to your child. Instead, we think of your child as: Working towards the national standard (this will be reported to you as Working Towards ) Working at the national standard (this will be reported to you as Expected ) Working above the national standard (this will be reported to you as Greater Depth ) The government now has six tests put in place in Reading, Spelling, Grammar and Mathematics that Year 2 children are required to take in May. The scores from these tests, alongside class teacher assessments are used to report whether your child is working ‘at, below or above’ the National expected level for their age. We use some in-house tests to guide our tracking of your child’s learning but mostly rely on the work within your child’s books. We moderate extensively with one another and partner schools to quality assure our assessments. We will update you twice a year in parent evenings and then in an end of year school report.
