• 1995 (circa): Keynote by Dr. Carol A. Twigg, VP at Educom and someone asked a simple question, “why don’t we have all thesis and dissertations submitted by computer”?
• 13 members from all schools and colleges, including the graduate school and the libraries. • Charge: assess feasibility & desirability of a policy allowing ETDs, major issues of such a policy, and appropriate recommendations • Documents: Virginia Tech ETD Initiative and UT Austin, Ad Hoc Committee on Digital Dissertations Report
Ten recomm mmend endatio ations: ns: Major or Four Proceed to develop policies and procedures to permit, encourage, and ultimately require electronic filing and archiving Portable Document Format (PDF) be used with provision to add other file formats in line with program needs and advancing technology Libraries to archive on CD-ROM and circulating copies of ETDs made available to academic community via the university’s WWW page. Develop and adopt formal ETD policies and procedures, involving graduate faculty in discussions; mandate ETDs in Fall 1998

VTDs: Virtual Theses and Dissertations University publishing of works conducted at their own institutions or a consortium of institutions, distributed world-wide Phase-out of disciplinary journals and publications as users become more interdisciplinary; individuals to bundle into their own unique interest “journals”
