20,000 Doves Project Lichfield Cathedral
DOVE - SYMBOL OF PEACE • The dove has been a symbol of peace for centuries, from the Greek and Romans, through Christianity and into the modern day. • Doves have been used by artists for a long time to represent peace and hope in paintings and have also been used for logos, for example, International Peace Day. • It is the purity of the white colour of the dove that has lent a sense of freedom; they are the universal symbol of peace, humanity, and love.
DOVE - SYMBOL OF PEACE • In Christianity the dove has represented the Holy Spirit and the peace of God. • In the bible the dove appeared in the sky when Jesus was baptised in the River Jordan. • Now the dove can mean peace and hope to people all around the world, from many different backgrounds and cultures.
PEACE WHO? WHAT? WHY? WHERE? WHEN? WHAT DOES PEACE MEAN TO YOU?
FORGIVENESS WHO? WHAT? WHY? WHERE? WHEN? WHAT DOES FORGIVENESS MEAN TO YOU?
20,000 Doves at Lichfield Cathedral • The doves are very simple to assemble, but we would also like each one to be personalised with a message, or prayer or drawing related to peace. • These are examples of how simple the dove can be decorated, but you can decorate them in any way you like, as colourfully as you like, although we recommend without glitter!
DISCUSS • How could you decorate your dove? • What might you write? • What design could represent peace?
