Tip Number Ten • Remember to speak in a loud and clear tone • Do not speak too fast • Pause between sentences and take a breathe • Varying up your eye contact- do not just “stare” at the one person who is acknowledging what you are saying • Vary up your tone of voice • Remember key to being a scientist is communicating your findings so be sure that what you are saying makes sense to others
Tip Number Eleven • The 10-20-30 Slideshow Rule: This rule states that a PowerPoint slide should have no more than 10 slides, last no longer than 20 minutes and have no text less than 30 point font. • Use as many pictures and diagrams as possible • Use dark font over light background and light font over dark background to enhance clarity. • Every presentation should have a clear introduction, middle and an end.
Tip Number Twelve • Leave your arms on the podium or by your sides when you are not using them to make gestures. • When gesturing, make sure that it is natural and spontaneous. • Use anecdotes and practical examples to make complicated concepts more comprehensible.
