  4. Content Personal and Social Life Self, family, friends, home life, shopping, meals, healthy living, illness and accident, free time, fashion, relationships, future plans. The Local Community Hometown, school, education, local environment, pollution, recycling, local facilities, comparisons with other towns and regions, weather and seasons. The World of Work Work experience, part-time jobs, future careers, technology (sending messages, accessing information) The Wider World Travel and holidays, media, social issues (e.g. life of young people today, homelessness, crime, drugs, healthy living, religion, politics), life in the countries and communities where the language is spoken.

  5. Unit 1 and Unit 3 These are exam papers which will be taken in the June examination period at the end of Year 11. They can be taken at Higher or Foundation level. Each carry 20% of the overall mark .

  6. Unit 2 Speaking • The speaking test is in two parts: – Conversation – Presentation • These will be tested and recorded during Year 10 and Year 11. • Samples are sent off to the exam board Unit 2 makes up 30% of the overall mark

  7. Unit 4 Writing • Pupils submit 2 pieces of written coursework • For a C or above they must write 200 words. • Each piece has a 2 week preparation period. • It will then be written in examination conditions in the classroom

  8. Year 9 Term One Personal identification Family/Friends Focus on improving writing and speaking skills, longer reading and listening texts. Assessment: week beginning 4 th November • Extended writing task • Speaking presentation

  9. Year 9 Term Two Holidays/Transport Hotels/restaurants Focus on improving writing and speaking skills, group talk and role- plays Assessments: week beginning 13 th Jan and 17 th March • Extended writing task • Speaking conversation

  10. Year 9 Term Three Project work Focus on improving writing and speaking skills, longer reading and listening texts. Assessment: week beginning 2 nd June • Higher/foundation GCSE reading paper • Higher/foundation GCSE listening paper

  11. How you can help: • Test vocabulary • Watch French/Spanish films! • Encourage your son/daughter to use language websites • Be aware of when your son/daughter has an assessment. • Listen while he/she practices/reads it aloud. • Encourage your son/daughter to do a little preparation at a time and not leave it until the night before! • Encourage your son/daughter to record themselves and/or write it out lots of times!
