Students sat the new Mathematics GCSE in June 2018. This was the first year to include the new changes

Key things to know about the new Mathematics GCSE 1. It’s bigger • There is more content in both the Higher and Foundation tiers. • The higher tier in particular stretches pupils to prepare them for A Level Mathematics
2. The assessment objectives have changed • There is more emphasis on problem solving and interpreting • Greater emphasis is placed on assessing skills in Algebra and Ratio and Proportion
3. Memorising formulae Formulae will now mostly need to be memorised. A question may provide specific formulae if required but it will assume the student knows the basic ones. Hand out provided with key formulae to memorise

How you can support your child’s learning • Be aware of when and if homework is being completed • Regular revision – recommended online revision sites/revision workbooks/exam papers/revision postcards • Make sure they have the equipment they need. • Pens, pencils • Ruler, compass, protractor • Calculator
….but just as important… • Ask them about what they are currently learning regularly • Find out how they are feeling about their exams and the work this year • Get them to tell you what they need to do even better • Communicate with us if you have any concerns, through the form tutor or maths teacher

Exam Board Specifications AQA Trilogy or AQA Separate Sciences
Main Changes: • Students are expected to memorise a large number of equations. • Content is more difficult • Removal of coursework • Introduction of required practicals
AQA GCSE Biology, Chemistry and Physics • On successful completion students will be awarded three GCSEs • Students will sit six exams each lasting 1 hour 45 minutes • Each exam is worth 50% of each Science • There is no coursework element
AQA COMBINED SCIENCE • On successful completion students will be awarded two GCSEs • Students will sit six exams • Each exam is worth 16.7% and lasts for 1 hour 15minutes • There is no coursework element
