  1. Wyandotte Geothermal

  2. Overview of Wyandotte Municipal Services Provides Electric, Water, Cable, Internet, & VOIP Phone Service s  Water Utility  Formed in 1889  Approx 10,000 customers  Electric Utility  Formed in 1892  Approx 12,000 customers  Cable Utility  Formed in 1981  Approx 8,500 customers

  3. Overview on Geo-Exchange Technology  1946 First successful Ground Source Heat Pump installed in Portland, OR  Primarily open loop systems until 1979, now almost all are closed loop  As of 2004, an estimated 12 GW of thermal capacity installed world wide  Each year about 80,000 units are installed in the US

  4. How Geo-Exchange Works • During the winter, the fluid collects heat from the earth and carries it through the system and into the building. • During the summer, the system reverses itself to cool the building by pulling heat from the building, carrying it through the system and placing it in the ground. • This process creates free hot water in the summer and delivers substantial hot water savings in the winter.

  5. Why Does WMS Promote Geothermal  Energy Efficiency  Improves system load factor  Is a dispatchable renewable energy source  Lowers customers energy costs  Economic development

  6. Energy Efficiency The GSHP is one of the most efficient residential heating and cooling systems available today, with heating efficiencies 50 to 70% higher than other heating systems and cooling efficiencies 20 to 40% higher than available air conditioners. That directly translates into savings for you on your utility bills. Source “ International Ground Source Heat Pump Association”

  7. Improves System Load Factor

  8. Lowers Energy Costs  The average customer will save $580 dollars per year  After approximately 22 years they will “break even” and begin to save even more money  WMS will also be saving on power generation

  9. Annual Cost to Heat and Cool vs. Size of Home Annual Cost to Heat and Cool $0.00 $1,000.00 $2,000.00 $3,000.00 $4,000.00 $5,000.00 700 890 950 1,000 1,000 1,100 1,100 1,200 Conventional 1,250 1,400 Geo Size of home 1,500 (Sq FT) 1,500 1,600 1,650 1,700 1,800 1,800 2,200 2,200 2,300

  10. Geothermal vs. Conventional $2,500.00 $2,000.00 $1,500.00 Annual Cost to Annual Gas Total Heat/Cool in Annual Electric total dollars $1,000.00 $500.00 $0.00 Conventional $2,000.00 $1,500.00 Annual Cost to Annual Geo Costs Heat/Cool in $1,000.00 Total dollars $500.00 $0.00 Geothermal

  11. Different Types of Energy

  12. Lowers Customers Energy Costs  Current Incentives in Wyandotte  30% Federal Tax Credit  1.99% Unsecured Loans Available  WMS working on new incentive program  Also Offering Other Programs  Home Energy Audits  Suite of Other Rebates & Incentives under the Energy Smart Programs

  13. What an Installation Looks Like

  14. Drilling Experience  Urban Area  Average lot width varies 40 ft. to 70 ft.  Landscaped yards  Trees, sidewalks, driveways, curbs, porches, etc.  Artesian Wells  Rotten egg odors  Fractured Limestone

  15. Current Status in Wyandotte  Over 60 Geothermal Units in Operation  25 new residential installations  19 retrofit residential installations  3 commercial installations  2 new multi-family developments (20 units)  3 Private home owners subscribed
