Our Program is NOT focused on grammar
Our Program IS focused on Communication
Languages offered: ● Spanish ● French ● Mandarin
Tracking ● Mixed-ability grouping for Levels I and II ● Honors begins in Level III ● Introduction to Spanish Courses (2 year sequence)
Differentiation ● Mixed ability classes require differentiation ● All World Language teachers receive training on effective methods of differentiation ● World Language teaching focuses on moving students along a continuum, beginning with where they are NOW
How much of the class is in the target language? 90-100%
What do teachers do to help students understand? ○ Visual cues ○ Pictures/videos ○ Props ○ Gesturing ○ Cognates ○ Simple language
What makes our program different?
NJDOE Model Program 2016-2018 ● Our district serves as a model for other districts to emulate ● If another district seeks to improve their program, they will contact us with questions ● If another district seeks to improve their program, they will arrange a visit to our program
How many languages can/should a student take? Students who are interested in the study of language should strongly ● consider studying two languages simultaneously For example: ● four years of Spanish and two years of Mandarin ○ Four years of French and two years of Spanish ○ Four years of Spanish and four years of Mandarin ○ Given the quality of the program, students should be encouraged to ● take advantage of it!
