WELLNESS PRESENTATION
Current Research • 1 in 5 students will experience some form of mental illness in a given year (United States Department of Health and Human Services, 2013) • The number of youth with a mental illness diagnosis has doubled since 1995 (Olfson, Blanco, Wang, Laje, & Correll, 2014) • The number of youth taking a psychotropic medication has doubled since 1995 (Olfson et al., 2014) • Bipolar disorders, substance abuse and Mood disorders (anxiety and depression) account for the largest growth in diagnosis (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2013)
Implications of Mental Illness • Students with mental illness; • Are less likely to graduate (Mcleod & Kaiser, 2013; McLeod et al., 2012) • Are less like to go to college (Mcleod & Kaiser, 2013) • Have lower GPA’s (McLeod, Uemura, & Rohrman, 2012) • Attend school inconsistently (DeSocio & Hootman, 2004) • Have double the risk of drug abuse (Armstrong & Costello, 2002; Winstanley, Steinwachs, Stitzer, & Fishman, 2012) • Are more likely to live in poverty (National Center for Education Statistics, 2011) • Are more likely to engage in criminal activity and be incarcerated (Coker, Smith, Westphal, Zonana, & McKee, 2014)
Challenges • The mission of schools is to educate children • Not designed, nor funded to provide social service functions • However our reality is different • Students in crisis and suffering from trauma are not in a position to access curriculum • As Maslow theorized, our students are living in a state of unmet base needs • School systems are uniquely positioned to address the problem of mental illness
Wellness Initiative • 2012-2013 school year • Unacceptable rates of suspension and expulsion • Extreme behaviors at early grades • School personal overwhelmed and lacking expertise in the area of mental health • In response • A team of mental health professionals developed a system of support which focused on case management and coordination • All elementary sites received 6 hours a week (I day) of support from a Wellness Coordinator • Wellness Coordinator is a licensed mental health professional (LCSW or MFT)
Elementary Outcomes • 2014-2015 School year • 310 Elementary students received services as part of Wellness Program • Walker-McConnell • “an assessment too which provides normative scores of student behavior…for screening and identification of social skill deficits in elementary-aged children who are at risk for academic and social difficulties.” (Lewis, 1991, pg. 159) • Average range for school preferred behaviors is 25-75 and scores are reported in 3 categories as well as an overall score. Teacher Preferred Peer Preferred Classroom Adjustment Total Scores Behaviors Behaviors Behaviors Pre-Test 26.6 25.7 27.8 22.2 Post-Test 30.7 34.6 34.4 31 Difference + 7.1 + 8.9 + 6.6 +8.8
Current Secondary Status • Currently there are no coordinated MHS at secondary sites

LCAP – Action Steps 3.2.Ensure that professional development includes culturally relevant engagement strategies that promote communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking , and raises awareness of student and teacher perceptions about high expectations and caring relationships. 3.6. Provide additional support and monitoring to school sites to increase school connectedness and students’ social-emotional well- being, including reducing suspension and chronic absenteeism. Reduce the number of students who report being bullied or harassed at school, including in person or online/cyber-bullying. Examples of supports: anti-bullying programs, cyber-safety, counselors, wellness coordinators, paraprofessionals, vice principals, etc
