Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum for children aged 0-5 years. • 7 areas of learning and development, 3 Prime areas and 4 Specific areas • Prime areas are Personal, Social & Emotional, Communication & Language and • Physical Development. Specific areas are Literacy, Maths, Understanding the World and Expressive • Arts & Design. Within each area of learning there are individual strands - 17 in total which • are all equally important. Characteristics of Effective Learning. • Early Learning Goals and a Good Level of Development. • A profile is completed at the end of Reception stating whether your child is • emerging, expected or exceeding the Early Learning Goals.

  3. How do we implement the curriculum in the Early Years? Each area of learning and development must be implemented through planned, purposeful play and through a mix of adult-led and child-initiated activity. Children learn by leading their own play, and by taking part in play which is guided by adults. (EYFS 2014)

  4. What is play? Play is freely chosen by the children and is under the control of the child. The child decides how to play, how long to sustain the play, what the play is about and who to play with. There are many forms of play, but is usually highly creative, open-ended and imaginative. It requires active engagement of the players, and can be deeply satisfying.

  5. What will learning look and feel like for your child? Daily teaching sessions for Literacy, Maths and Phonics • Activities available for children to practise new skills • independently Balance of child and adult initiated activities • Free flow sessions between classrooms and outdoors • Objective led planning linked to children’s interests • Initial focus on Prime areas of learning •

  6. What will a typical day look like? Self Registration • Activities available for children to access independently • Teaching staff will work with children individually or in small groups • Whole class teaching session either Literacy, Maths or Phonics focus • Free flow session between classes and outdoors • Whole class teaching session either Literacy, Maths or Phonics focus • Lunch • Whole class teaching session either Literacy, Maths or Phonics focus • Free flow session between classes and outdoors • 3 a day stories •

  7. How do we record what the children are learning? Observations – written, photos, videos, audio • In the moment observations • Objective led observations • Class assessments • Inform planning for next week • Parent partnership • Learning journeys •

  8. How to help at home Independent in self care – dressing, feeding • Toilet trained including washing hands • Develop listening and attention skills through listening to stories and rhymes • Conventions of a conversation – eye contact, taking it in turns to listen and talk • Sharing and turn taking in games – not always winning! • Writing their name - Capital letter to start and lower case for the rest • Letter sounds not letter names • Counting, recognising and ordering numbers initially to 10 • Make sure immunisations are up to date. •

Transition into school Open Afternoon on Tuesday 10 th September 3.45pm – 5.30pm • Home visits between Tuesday 3rd and Tuesday 10th September • Settling in days Wednesday 11 th and Thursday 12 th September- we will let you • know which day. All children start full time on Friday 13th September unless we have agreed with • parent/carers that they need a more staggered start. Please fill in the form in the pack and return to a member of staff before you leave • today.

  10. The first few weeks... Parents are welcome to bring children into class and settle them at an activity • If you have any concerns or worries please speak to a teacher. • Children get a fruit snack during the morning and milk in the afternoon. • All children have the option of free hot meal. A sample menu is in your pack. • Packed lunch- healthy, no nuts, no fizzy drinks or sweets and chocolate, • sensible amount. Water available all day but children can bring named water bottles if they • wish. They will be exhausted even if they have attended nursery before. •
