Term Time Holidays – send a written request to HT – 99% are unauthorised. Significant unauthorised absence can result in fines. Attendance is monitored and parents are written to if attendance is low. The Education Welfare Officer can become involved at the request of the school. Missed days means missed learning and it is very difficult for children to catch up.

PE timetable: Indoor PE is on Monday and outdoor PE is on Wednesday and Kits must be in school at all times. • Two separate bags is easier for them. • Outdoor Games takes place in almost all weather! • Suitable kit – tracksuits/gloves/hats and OLD trainers. • Please ensure ALL KIT IS NAMED that it fits them , and that children have a bag to put muddy shoes in! • Children should wear black shorts and a plain white t-shirt • Football kits are not permitted • You are welcome to take kits home to wash over the weekend!

  6. Homework: Year 6 is all about encouraging children’s independence in their learning and their life skills ready for secondary school. Maths and English Homework will be set on a Thursday and is due back on a Tuesday. Please read with your child at least 3 times a week and sign in the HASP book – this is monitored regularly and children are rewarded for having 5 reads in a week. Homework is extremely important! It is always based on what has been taught that week at school to consolidate or extend learning. If you would like to discuss homework with your child’s class teacher, please do. We will run a homework club if it is needed and children who do not complete their homework WILL be required to attend. This will be at lunch time.

  7. Accelerated Reader An exciting tool to motivate, monitor and support reading. Personalised targets Online quizzes to measure understanding

  8. Supporting and challenging your child During the year a range of intervention groups run to maximise children’s progress – these are run by teachers and TAs. They have already started. Parents evenings are October and one in the Spring term. If you would like to speak to us outside of this please arrange a meeting with the office

NO FASHION items or make-up – including nail varnish. No jewellery other than a single plain stud in each ear. These should be taken out for PE or covered with tape. 18. HELP! Help in school – we need readers, trip helpers, people to do cooking, or to play games with children and any other offers of skills and support! We don’t mind how often! We welcome visitors – if you know of anyone who could share their skills or speak to the children about an interest, let us know! Please see your class teacher – all offers gratefully received!

  19. SATs More information will be given nearer the time through letters, class dojo and parents evening but….. Attendance is incredibly important. We have the whole Y6 curriculum to cover before May plus revise concepts taught in years 3, 4 and 5 as they also come up in the tests.

  20. Past Papers • A copy of last year’s papers are available online. Please take a look at them. The content is quite tricky. • We will be using past papers to assess children throughout the year and identify areas for improvement so please refrain from using these until later in the year. I will put a message on class dojo.

  21. Pass marks These fluctuate each year depending on the results. The more children pass, the higher the pass rate and vice versa. We cannot predict what will happen each year. All of the pass marks went up this year.

  22. How is writing assessed? • Teacher assessment • Must meet all criteria on the framework – you can collect a copy from the front. • Either Working below age related expectations • Working towards age related expectations • Working at age related expectations • Working above age related expectations • Last year we were moderated. 2 people from the local authority came to check our judgements. We did really well and some children got moved up a grade boundary.

  23. When is writing assessed? • After SATs – cannot give an exact date. • Sometimes more evidence is needed and will then be taken to another review meeting. It is important that the children are in school to complete this extra work.

  24. How can you help? See the back of the newsletter that gets sent out with each new topic.

  25. How else can you help? When reading with your child, ask questions to check they understand what they are reading. Discuss new and unfamiliar vocabulary. Times tables! They underpin lots of mathematical concepts so having this knowledge will help them throughout the maths curriculum.

  26. Any questions? We very much look forward to this year, and hope that you and your child will be able to look back upon it with a proud smile and lots of happy memories!
