  3. Selecting A College/University There are over 5,000 colleges and universities in the U.S! Keep the following in mind….. • Four- year, two-year, public, private or vocational. • Location.-Do you want to be close to home or far away? • Size.- Under 3,000 students or over 30,000 students. • Coed or single sex. • Private or public institutions. • Programs of study offered. • Sports and extracurricular activity available. • Cost.- Do not exclude any choices because of high cost. (Expensive schools often offer more aid). ALWAYS CHECK THE NET PRICE CALCULATOR.

COMMUNITY/STATE COLLEGES…28 IN FLORIDA • Programs of 6 months to full Bachelor’s degrees designed for the student to either transfer into a four- year university, go directly into the workforce or even go on to Graduate level studies. • Open admissions – anyone with a high school diploma or GED is admitted. • SAT/ACT not required – do need to be “placed” with either SAT/ACT or PERT (more about that later!) • Vast selection of programs including Graphic Design, Music Production & Management, Fire Science Technology, Nursing and much more.

THE TIMELINE • Aug.-Oct./Nov.: Applications for admission • Aug.- June SAT/ACT testing…what are you testing for???? • Oct.: Florida Financial Aid Application - FFAA (Bright Futures & all state programs) • Oct-Dec.: PPY (Prior Prior Year…NEW!!!)Federal Financial Aid (FAFSA) • Feb.-Apr.: Housing applications • Mar.-May: Verification & Award letters

Ap Appl plying ing Fo For r Ad Admi mission ssion • Application - (online or paper – online is preferred by most schools ) REQUIRED EVERYWHERE • Transcript - electronic or hard copy REQUIRED EVERYWHERE • Application fee - REQUIRED EVERYWHERE (fee waiver(s) can be used) • SAT/ACT scores – REQUIRED MOST EVERYWHERE • Letters of recommendation - (if applicable) • Essay - (if applicable) • Copy of other required documentation – (if applicable) Important! Keep photocopies of everything you mail!

SAT Subject Tests • Subject Tests are designed to measure your knowledge and skills in particular subject areas, as well as your ability to apply that knowledge. • Required by CERTAIN colleges/universities for CERTAIN majors. • Offered on the SAME DAY as the regular SAT (except for the March administration) • You may sign to take up to ( 3 ) SAT II on the same test date. • Registration available online at www.collegeboard.com

  10. FEE WAIVERS… If you are on free or reduced lunch – or meet other eligibility requirements - you qualify for the following. Remember that you must reapply each year to remain eligible. • 2 ACT test waivers • 2 SAT Reasoning test fee waivers ( and up to 2 more for Subject Area exams if needed ) • 4 College Board - College Application Fee Waivers • 4 ACT College Application Fee Waivers • Waivers used during your junior year count • If you are issued a waiver, register for a test and do not show up to take the test – YOU WILL NOT BE ISSUED YOUR 2 ND WAIVER!!

For SAT, request the Question/Answer Service-QAS- (though only available for certain test dates – October, March and May test dates). PERT Miami Dade Placement Test • At Miami Dade College – and other 2-year schools - you are exempt from the PERT if you score: SAT I- >440 Verbal >500 Math ACT- >17- English >19- Reading 19-21 Math IMPORTANT: Please visit www.mdc.edu periodically for updates and changes. • If you don’t obtain the minimum scores on the SAT, ACT or PERT, then you will be placed in remedial classes.

Academic Courses Recommended For Florida State Universities Completion of 20+ academic units in a college preparatory curriculum • 4 years of English • 4 years of mathematics (Algebra I or higher) • 3 years of natural sciences (including lab) • 3 years of social studies • 2 to 4 years of the same foreign language (American Sign Language may not be accepted by some out of state schools and private institutions) • 4 years of academic electives ( especially in the areas of math, natural sciences and/or social studies)
