Aims of this talk To inform you about: • the difficulty for people in some poorer countries to get clean, safe water • the work of WaterAid • a specific project that Rotary Clubs have supported

The water crisis Issues raised in the video: • The need to carry water, often for a considerable distance • The source is a murky pond • The supply is not reliable • The time taken up by collecting water means less time for her family • Health issues
Some statistics • 10% of the world’s population do not have access to safe drinking water. • 40% of the world’s population do not have adequate sanitation. (ie a safe and hygienic place to go to the toilet) • Globally, 1400 children die every day of diarrhoeal diseases.

Samfya District progress so far Thanks to the support of Rotary clubs last year: • Over 8,000 people gained access to new facilities • 10 new boreholes were drilled • Over 870 latrines were built • The proportion of the population with safe drinking water increased from 9.8% to 23.3% • The proportion with somewhere safe to go to the toilet increased from 2.3% to 29.1% But, there is still great need across the district. www.wateraid.org
Samfya District project – targets • 6,400 more people with access to a safe water supply • 8,510 more will gain access to improved hygiene • 9,600 more with access to safe toilets www.wateraid.org
Samfya project update January 2014 148 Rotary clubs have donated over £107,000 • 3,600 more people now have access to safe water • 7,206 more people now have access to adequate sanitation • 915 households have adopted good hygiene practices • “Tippy taps” are now used outside latrines in all target communities www.wateraid.org
Samfya District specific projects - water • Drill 7 new boreholes, benefiting 1,750 people • Rehabilitate 4 traditional water sources, benefiting 1,600 people • Rehabilitate 7 wells, benefiting 1,050 • Water point chlorination testing to ensure that water is drinkable www.wateraid.org

Samfya District specific projects - hygiene • Construct 1,535 household washing facilities • Promote good hygiene across the 4 schools • Buy 8 bicycles to help hygiene promoters travel to towns to reach more people with hygiene messages www.wateraid.org

How your club can help • £75 for a bicycle for a hygiene promoter • £125 to construct handwashing facilities for one school • £275 to restore a communal water point for 200 people • £630 to build a school latrine • £925 for the rehabilitation of a well serving 150 people • £3,700 for machine drilling one borehole, serving 250 people www.wateraid.org
