Recent Redesign • Thi hird & Fin inal redesign for project • North end of trail (Walter Reed to 6 th St.) now has curb and gutter rather than a wide paved shoulder • Trail is shifted into area where shoulder had been • Reduced impacts upon hillside and vegetation (trees) between roadway and residences • Less wall and barrier construction, reduced new pavement area Arlington Blvd Trail east of Courthouse Road- Curb and gutter without paved shoulder

Existing, g, Prior & New Trail Section Designs Existing: • 11’ wide asphalt shoulder with gutter • 1.5’ wide guard rail Prior: • 10’ wide asphalt shoulder • 1.5’ wide concrete barrier & 2’ paved buffer • 10’ asphalt trail New: • No shoulder (north of 6 Th Street) • 2.5’ wide curb and gutter & 5’ wide landscaped buffer • 10’ asphalt trail

  8. Change in Tree Im Impacts • Original design = 198 trees to be removed • Feb 2013 Environmental Assessment = 128 trees • Current design = 84 trees, of which 23 are either invasive species (19) or dead (4) • Largest concentration between Walter Reed Dr and Second Street bridge

  9. Landscape is Degraded and Needs Restoration • Project includes invasive plant removal (applied for 3 years) • Substantial planting of new trees (3 for every 2 removed) • Native tree and shrub plantings • Trash removal

Im Implementation Steps • March & April 2016 – Public Outreach (Penrose, advisory commissions, website) • March thru June – Final VDOT & County review and permitting • July – Advertise for Bids • October – County Board awards contract to selected bidder • Late Fall 2016 thru Spring/Summer 2017 – Construction (6 to 9 months) • Replanting – Spring and Fall 2017
