Why are we moving to a middle school model? Rationale: -Less than 3.5% of California Districts have traditional Junior High Model (Grades 7 and 8) -New California Standards are organized by: K-5, 6-8, 9-12 -Currently, roughly 2400 elementary students are overloaded to other district sites outside of their attendance area -To support increasing enrollment in FUSD

6 th Grade Curriculum 6 th grade middle schools will have same 6 th grade curriculum standards : subjects broken up into two core classes 6 th grade students take: Core 1 : Math and Science Core 2 : History and English 1 Period: Physical Education (PE) 1 Period: 6 th Grade Wheel Additional Programs: ELD and SPED (secondary style programs)

6 th Grade Wheel Opportunity for students to participate in an additional course that supports their 6 th grade curriculum. These courses focus on essential skills to build a lasting foundation that allows for continued success at the secondary level. The courses are engaging and interactive to provide a positive impact for the 6 th grade student. Courses will support: Technological understanding Healthy Lifestyles Digital Literacy ELA/Math Enrichment Study Skills Making the right decisions Innovative Ideas Organization Speaking in Groups Study Habits

Bell Schedule Overview Home Room: Daily Announcements Passing Period: 4 minutes given for students to get to next class Book Storage: students are not allowed to have backpacks during lunch. Students drop off their backpacks in the classroom they have after lunch Lunch: Students can bring their lunch or purchase lunch/snacks in the cafeteria Read: Mondays and Fridays have silent read time where students bring a book of their choosing. Lunch Time Activities: Daily: Game Room, Library, Ball room to check out items to use during lunch Occasional: Clubs meetings, ASB held activities, organized basketball games, various teacher led activities
FLEX Time: Tuesday/Thursday This time is a great opportunity for intervention for struggling students as well as to enhance/challenge student understanding to a higher level. All of our junior highs have adopted “FLEX time” to improve student performance and support their emotional well-being Used for: Improving Test Scores Expand student knowledge Make up missed work Stress Reduction Study for upcoming Supplemental Material exams Exposure Group Projects/ Class Reteaching/Reviewing Activities
