Update on assessment changes for Year 7 and 8 Changes everywhere - PowerPoint PPT Presentation

Update on assessment changes for Year 7 and 8 Changes everywhere for our younger students New curriculum being followed in primary and secondary school. Preparing for new more demanding GCSE and A levels exams. National curriculum

  1. Update on assessment changes for Year 7 and 8

  2. Changes everywhere for our younger students • New curriculum being followed in primary and secondary school. • Preparing for new more demanding GCSE and A levels exams. • National curriculum levels (4b, 4a, 5c, 5b, 5a, 6c) have been abolished. • We have been preparing for this over a three year period

  3. New schemes of learning Better New New preparation assessment for GCSE tasks and beyond New assessment system

  4. Effort New Assessment System Progress Attainment

  5. Effort Grades • Even at reports time our current 1, 2 and 3 allows for very generous analysis of student effort. • In marking we don’t tend to see much focus on how hard the students have tried with a piece of work. • We want to draw a bigger distinction between what is ‘good enough’ and what is ‘absolutely fantastic’. • Likewise at the lower end - what is just not good enough, and what is not acceptable.

  6. SO, ON OUR REPORTS WE WILL SEE 1-4 FOR EFFORT. • This will be used to reward students who consistently give excellent effort. • We will also incorporate homework into the overall effort grade.

  7. GRADE 1 • Outstanding commitment given to their learning. Always tries hard and perseveres when the challenge and work difficulty increases. Homework is always completed and goes well beyond the minimum that is expected. Shows a genuine interest in the subject and independently researches work and asks questions. Always well organised and prepared to learn.

  8. GRADE 2 • Shows a good attitude to their learning. Homework is always completed and meets the standards expected for them. They are well organised and give high levels of effort to their learning and generally approach challenging tasks positively.

  9. GRADE 3 • Their attitude to learning is inconsistent. They do not always give their best effort to learning tasks. Homework whilst usually completed, is often not at the standard that would be expected for them, or is often late. They are not always well organised.

  10. GRADE 4 • Does not display a good attitude to their learning. Homework is rarely completed on time and is often not at the expected standard for them. Shows little interest in the subject and does not seek to learn independently or ask questions. Organisation is often poor.

  11. Attainment: how does their standard of work compare to what is possible?

  12. MARKING FOR ATTAINMENT • All subjects will be following new schemes of learning. • All subjects will have new assessment tasks written into the schemes of learning. • Most importantly all subjects will have a very clear framework as to the different degrees to which students are meeting the demands of the new schemes of learning.

  13. SO, AGAINST THAT FRAMEWORK FOR THE SUBJECT/YEAR The grade awarded will be set out against the overall scheme of learning for the year (in the end of term reports), or at a smaller level in the actual task in hand and will be defined as: 1. Exceptional. 2. Good. 3. Developing. 4. Foundation.

  14. WE WILL USE THIS IN REFERENCE TO A FLIGHT PATH • Our Flight Path meaning……….. • If the child continued to work at this level and they continued to apply the same level of effort then we might reasonably except them to achieve……

  15. OUR SUGGESTED FLIGHT PATH • KS3 Descriptor • Grade expected at GCSE assuming effort and learning is maintained ATTAINMENT PROFILE GCSE TARGET RANGE Exceptional 9-7 Good 6-5 Developing 4-3 Foundation 2-1

  16. Progress: are they attaining standards that are expected for them?

  17. WHAT WILL THIS LOOK LIKE FOR PARENTS ON THE REPORT? • Exceeding Expectations. GOLD • Easily Meeting Expectations. GREEN • Just meeting Expectations. AMBER • Below Expectations. RED Although the effort grade should imply how happy we are with a students commitment, we also wanted to quantify this in terms of progress made.

  18. FOR EXAMPLE Name: A Non Subject: Maths Attainment: Developing Effort: 1 Progress: Amber: Just Meeting Expectations

  19. YEAR 7 AND 8 REPORTING • Parents will not receive a written report from their subject teachers. • Parents will instead receive 3 sets of grade reports, the final one being accompanied by a written report from their form tutor. • Replacing the written report will be a second parents evening with subject teachers. We believe the two face to face opportunities will be more informative for parents and helpful for staff: RE, Music. • For Year 8 the second parents evening will only be in subjects students will follow in KS4.
