Why choose the University of Greenwich ? ▪ We have three beautiful and historic campuses: Greenwich, Medway and AveryHill ▪ Nursing and Midwifery is based at Avery Hill, Eltham, which is convenient for Central London and the Kent countryside ▪ We provide training and education for health and social care organisations throughout South East England ▪ We offer a range of qualifying and post qualified courses for professionals from various disciplines, as well as traditional academic degrees

Nursing at the University of Greenwich? ▪ Our nursing course is a three year full time course which commences in January and September ▪ 50% of the course is theoretical and based at Avery Hill Campus (on-line and face-to-face as appropriate) ▪ 50% of the course is practice based learning based in service providers - students are allocated to one NHS Trust for the whole three years

  6. Practice based learning When researching the trusts we send our students to please remember that although you will have placements in acute hospital trusts you will spend as much time in community placements as we nurse many children and young people in their homes.

What does a typical university day looklike? ▪ Classroom teaching usually takes place between 09.00 and 19.00 – online between 09.00-17.00 - with breaks ▪ The library has extended opening hours ▪ Typically 25-30 hours classroom/online time per week ▪ Attendance and punctuality is important and is monitored ▪ Facilities - restaurant, shop, student union ▪ Car parking - parking charges in place: pay anddisplay (£1 for 24 hours)

Structure of course from January and September 2020: YEAR 3 You will share learning with other health students on the following modules: ▪ Exploring Evidence for Professional Practice (30 YEAR 1 credits Level 6) ▪ Professional and academic development(30 ▪ Preparation for Professional Practice credits Level 4) (30 credits Level 6) ▪ Anatomy, physiologyand pharmacology (30 credit Level 4) YEAR 2 ▪ Understanding Research inEvidence-Based Practice (30 credits Level 5) ▪ Pathophysiology:illness and its impact upon an individual (15 credits Level5)

You will also have Children’s Nursing specific learning on the followingmodules YEAR 1 YEAR 3 ▪ Foundationsof nursing practice (30 credits Level ▪ Advancing children’s nursing practice (30 4) credits Level 6) ▪ Consolidating children’s nursing (30 credits YEAR 2 Level 6) ▪ Developing children’s nursing practice (30 credits level 5)

  10. How will you study? We use many different methods to teach you: ▪ Lectures/online learning ▪ Flipped classes (where you will do preparatory work before the session) ▪ Skills sessions ▪ Self-directed ▪ Enquiry-based ▪ Presentations ▪ Seminars ▪ Debates ▪ Self-directed study at end of eachyear

  11. ▪ Modules may be completed and assessed in 1 term or run over two terms of theyear ▪ Assessment of practice based learning will occur during each placementperiod ▪ All assessments of theory andpractice must be achieved toprogress

Attendance ▪ During the three year nursing programme, you will be required to complete approximately 2015 weeks of theory and 20 weeks of practice based learning per year ▪ 100% attendance is required for both theory and practice-based learning ▪ Annual leave allocated per year: ▪ 2 weeks around Christmas/New Year ▪ 2 weeks around Easter – there is someflexibility ▪ Some weeks in July and August

  13. Will I have to workshifts? Nursing is often a 24/7 service You will be required to: ▪ Work shift patterns of the service, work weekends, public holidays,and ▪ Work night shifts throughout your three years ▪ Work the shifts that your practice assessor isworking ▪ Some services e.g. community nursing, are Monday to Friday 9-5

  14. Moving to the area? ▪ Accommodation is available oncampus in the student village ▪ Range of accommodationincluding en-suite or shared bathrooms ▪ A list of local private sectorrentals is available from the accommodation office

  15. Is there support available for me ? YES THERE IS … ▪ Academic Assessor There are many forms of support available for you whilst on the course. What happens on my selection day? ▪ You will be either be invited to our Avery Hill campus or sent a link for an on-line Microsoft Teams for an selection day which a face to face interview. ▪ The interview will consist of you answering a small number of questionsto show your knowledge and motivation about the course and also for you to demonstrate your transferable skills ▪ If you wish we will be able to organise a tour of the campus and the accommodation

  17. Outcome of my selection day Any offer of a place on the programme will be subject to: ▪ Occupational health assessment confirming medical fitness to undertake the programme ▪ Clear enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) police disclosure – or agreed by a practice partner ▪ On-time candidates will be informed of the outcome of interview prior to the UCAS March 2021 deadline ▪ Information on the applicant’s UCAS web page will be confirmed in writing by UCAS

Disclosure and Barring Service Disclosure ▪ Nursing courses are exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act(1974) ▪ This means that some criminal convictions are never ‘spent’ ▪ When asked at interview, you must declare whether you have any criminal convictions,cautions, reprimands, final warnings or anything recorded by the police which would not be filtered in line with current guidance ▪ Having a conviction does not necessarily preclude you from the programme but failing to disclose a conviction that is later revealed by the DBS disclosure will result in discontinuation from the programme

  19. and so… Have you considered…? ▪ You are going to be studying full time ▪ You are going to be working shifts ▪ You are going to be travelling to placements (and you may not be allocated to your first choice of NHS Trust) ▪ You will have to live on a student loan and bursary ▪ You may be moving away from home and into accommodation ▪ Balancing student life/home life
