What is it all about? The modern industrialisation of Norway started in Notodden – Rjukan in 1905. The starting point for development of the Scandinavian welfare model. The invention of artificial fertilizer saved the world from famine.
The four elements in the UNESCO application 1. Electric power production 2. The Fertilizer Factories 3. Company towns 4. Transport system
1. Electric power production The water falls (1000 meters) Electric Power Plants The industries had to be located close to the power source.
2. The Fertilizer Factories The new invention made it possible to extract nitrogen from air with electric power Nitrogen is the main ingredient in artificial fertilizer Started in Notodden 1905 The need for more power brought it to Rjukan in 1911
3. Company towns Rural societies were transformed to industrial cities. The Company built it all: – Houses, roads, schools, hospitals, churches and sport arenas Everything has to be done quick, and most of it is well conserved. This is interesting for UNESCO
