Triple Science Head of science – Miss White Head of Biology – Mr Bristoll Head of Physics – Mr Yapp Head of Chemistry – Miss Sumner
Why take triple science? • Cover more content than combined science, • Better prepared if you want to take Science A Levels • Thinking about university, careers and are interested in science-based degrees and jobs • Most top universities prefer applicants for Science subjects to have taken the Triple Award option at GCSE • Taking the Sciences separately will keep your options open • Employers highly rate triple science and the skills gained from these subjects
What topics will I cover? Biology • Cell Biology • Organisation • Bioenergetics • Infection & response • Homeostasis & response • Inheritance, variation & evolution • Ecology • Organisation of an ecosystem
What topics will I cover? Chemistry • Atomic structure & the periodic table • Structure, bonding & properties of matter • Chemical changes • Energy changes • Rates of reaction • Organic chemistry • Chemical analysis • Earth & atmosphere
What topics will I cover? Physics • Energy • Forces • Forces & motion • Waves in matter • Light & electromagnetic waves • Electricity • Magnetism & Electromagnetism • Particle model of matter • Atomic structure • Space physics
What support will I have? Staff Subject specialists and dedicated teachers Enrichment/revision sessions after school for each subject Materials/resources Peer Mentors 6 th form science students available for one-to-one mentoring in lessons Online Moodle packed full of resources for each topic
How will I be examined? • No controlled assessment, 100% exam – 2 papers per science (1hr 45mins each) • More exam questions drawing on maths skills • Exam questions will draw on experience students gain from practical work (15%) • Students required to keep records of practical work carried out • Minimum of 8 set practical's • 3 year linear course • All examinations will take place at the end of year 11 • Grades are awarded as numbers.
What do you need to succeed at triple science? • Level 6 or higher in science • Level 6 or higher in maths • Outstanding work ethic • Highly motivated • Ability to work independently • Good levels of literacy • More than just an interest in science and practicals
What resources will I have access to?
What is the difference between triple science and combined science? Triple Science Combined Science • 3 GCSE’s at the end • 2 GCSE’s at the end of the course (Bio, of the course Chem, Phy) • All examined at the • All examined at the end of yr11 end of yr11 • Less teaching hours • More teaching hours but less content to but more content to cover cover • Easier transition to A-level Sciences
