Intermediate Listening & Speaking Final presentation Project WHAT? In this project, you will research a person who is considered a hero in the United States. You will look at websites on the computer to find the answers to the questions below about your person, and then prepare a 2 minute presentation about your person to give to the class. Step #1 WHO? Here is a list of the people the class will present on. Find your name and the hero you will present. Make sure you can pronounce the name correctly!!! Do not copy from the Internet! Just put the main points or ideas. Do not write complete sentences . Remember you are doing a HERO worksheet.: Who is the Hero? : Background (include when they were born) , family background, jobs, volunteer work or things they did that were important Why is this person considered a hero? Give three reasons why the person is a hero: Reason/ detail / example
Step #3: Make an outline: Write your outline on a separate piece of paper (see pages138-139 to see an outline) HOW? Here are some websites that you can use to find photos and information about your person. You can use the information from these websites, but DON’T COPY. You must write the information you found IN YOUR OWN WORDS. You will use the vocabulary we learned this semester in your presentation. www.biography.com www.wikipedia.com www.google.com Step #4: Add your signal phrases into the outline and write the speech: use vocabulary words from units 2, 4, and 6. Use the grammar from units 2 present tense, 4 Contrast words, 6. Past tense: Most of the verb tenses will be in the past because the events happened in the past. REMEMBER : The events happened IN THE PAST, so be sure the verbs that you use when you speak about your person are in SIMPLE PAST TENSE. IF the person is still alive, you will probably use present tense too. Step #5 : You cannot read your speech. You may make some “note cards” where you write only signal phrases and the important information (see page 137-139). Step #6: Practice your presentation by using your note cards Pronunciation counts!!! Unit 2 : stressed words in a sentence/ unstressed words Unit 4: Intonation in questions and statements Unit 6 : past tense pronunciation/ signal phrases **You should also show a photograph of the person when you introduce the person to the class, so find a picture and make an 8 x 10 copy!! .
Timeline: May 8 th :-10th please start your research over the weekend. Have your plan notes ready and most of the outline done (see page 138-139. We will work on putting things in you own words, using the vocabulary and grammar from the units when we meet for individual conferences. Step 7: Practice Practice Practice You will give your presentation on one of these dates May 15 or 17 th . You must be prepared on the 15 th . If your name is on the board, you must give your presentation then. GRADE? Your grade for this presentation will be based on: a. Content—Answer all the questions in the outline on page 140. Speaker uses OWN WORDS not copied. b. Organization of speech: signal phrases / See Making transitions Unit 6 c. Delivery—Eye contact, no reading, loud voice, little hesitation. d. Pronunciation—Speak clearly with good syllable stress. Pronounce your “ed” endings on regular past tense verbs. People can understand you! e. Grammar—Use past tense and other verb forms correctly. Use good sentence structure. Use contrast words correctly see unit 4 f. Vocabulary use— appropriate use of vocabulary and good use of vocabulary we learned this semester
