- THURBER ENGINEERING L T D. ALBERTA TRANSPORTATION NORTH CENTRAL REGION- ATHABASCA AREA INSTRUMENTATION MONITORING RESULTS SPRING 2014 SECTION C SITE NC17A: HWY 63:12 TWINNING PROJECT BETWEEN SW18-90-9-W4M AND NW31-90-9-W4M ON HWY 63 NEAR FORT McMURRAY 1. OBSERVATIONS 1.1 Field Program and Instrumentation Status One slope inclinometer (8199-2) was read at the Highway 63: 12 site on May 27 , 2014, by Mr. Chad Gray, C.E. T. , and Mr. Jordan Balfour, G.I.T., both of Thurber Engineering Ltd . (Thurber). The Sl was read using a RST probe with 2 ft. wheelbase and a RST hand-held readout. Inclinometer reading depths were defined as per cable markings with respect to the top of the inclinometer cable clamps. 2. INTERPRETATION 2.1 General Sl plots A and B directions are presented in Section D and are summarized below. Where movement has been recorded the resultant plot (X direction) and rate of movement have also been provided. 2.2 Zones of Movement Zones of new movement were not observed since the last set of readings in the fall of 2013. Zones of movement are summarized on Table NC17A-1 at the end of this report. Table NC 17 A - 1 also provides a historical account of the total movement that has occurred at this site since the initialization of the slope inclinometers, the depth of movement, and the maximum rate of movement. 200, 9636- 51 Avenue, Edmonton , AB T6E 6A5 T: 780 438 1460 F: 780 437 7125 thurber . ca
- T H U R B E R 2.3 Interpretation of Monitoring Results 2.3.1 Preamble The instruments were installed to monitor potential movements in the valley colluvium deposits into which the highway backslopes were cut during the highway twinning project in 1999. The instruments located north of km 3.6 were installed at the higher backslope locations to check for potential movements between the existing Enbridge pipeline and the highway. The highest backslope sections are present at km 2.4 and km 2.7 where some of the colluvium was removed as borrow during highway development. These areas have been subject to backslope slumping. Additional instruments were installed at km 2.4 in January 2009 at a location where a backslope slump is toeing up into and distorting the southbound lanes of the highway. 2.3.2 km 2.4 Instruments SI09-3 located in the highway median, was damaged between the spring 2012 and fall 2012 readings. A casing joint approximately 1.2 m below ground surface was damaged. All of the instruments located within the slide area have previously sheared off. 2.3.3 km 2.7 Instruments The creep movement rate has decreased in Sl99-2 by 2.4 mm/yr to a rate of 1.7 mm/yr over 20.6 to 22.4 m depth. 3. RECOMMENDATIONS 3.1 Future Work The instruments should be read again in the fall of 2014. 3.2 Instrumentation Repairs No repairs are required at this time.
