GEOTECHN I CAL • ENVIRONMENTAL • MATERIALS ALBERTA TRANSPORTATION NORTH CENTRAL REGION- ATHABASCA AREA INSTRUMENTATION MONITORING RESULTS SPRING 2008 SECTION C SITE NC17a: HWY 63:12 TWINNING PROJECT BETWEEN SW18-90-9-W4M AND NW31-90-9-W4M ON HWY 63 NEAR FORT McMURRAY 1. OBSERVATIONS 1.1 Field Program and Instrumentation Status Five slope inclinometers (SI99-1, 99-2, 99-4R, 99-6 and 03-5) were monitored at Highway 63:12 site on May 14, 2008, by Mr. Chad Gray and Mr. Justin Sousa, of Thurber Engineering Ltd. (Thurber). The Sis were read using a SINCO Digitilt probe with 2 ft wheelbase and a Digitilt Datamate readout. Inclinometer reading depths were defined as per cable markings with respect to the top of the inclinometer cable clamps with the exception of SI99-4R, which was read from the top of the casing. 2. INTERPRETATION 2.1 General Sl plots A and B directions are presented in Section 0 and are summarized below. Where movement has been recorded the resultant plot (X direction) and rate of movement have also been provided. 2.2 Zones of Movement A new zone of movement was identifi ed in SI99-4R at a depth interval of 0.3 m to 2.1 m. The cumulative movement in this zone since the instrument was installed is 4.0mm. 2. -- - ' T 1 - 4 U R a s : l EiNGII\EEiRING L T C . Zones of movement are summarized on Table NC17a- 1 at the end of this report. Table NC17a - 1 also provides a historical account of the total movement that has occurred at this site since the initialization of the slope inclinometers, the depth of movement, and the maximum rate of movement. Interpretation of Monitoring Results 2.3 The movement rates have generally decelerated in the Sis compared to the last readings in the fall of 2007. The decrease in the rates of movement, since previous readings, ranged from 0.5 mm/yr in Sl99-1to 4.2 mm/yr in SI03-5. The maximum rate of movement recorded during this site visit was 4.5 mm/yr in SI03-5. 3. RECOMMENDATIONS 3.1 Future Work The instruments should be read again in the fall of 2008. Instrumentation Repairs 3.2 No instruments need to be repaired at this time. Date: July 9, 2008 Alberta Transportation Client: Page 2 of4 File: 15-16-215 e-file: 08\15\16-215 rpt NC17a
