Design Improvements 2012 ‘Mystery Canoe’ failed during races Cracki cking g in in c concret crete e and r d rupt pturin uring g of rei einforceme cement 3
Design Improvements Tensile loads on canoe were too much for reinforced concrete to handle – Thick concrete layers added extra weight – Weak aluminum reinforcement was not adequate to resist tensile loads placed on it Concrete did not bond properly across reinforcement open area 4
Mix ix De Desi sign gn – Improve workability to allow for better bonding across layers and make it easier to place thin layers – Increase tensile strength and reduce post-curing dryness with a more cohesive mix 5
Carb rbon on Fi Fiber er rei einf nfor orcement cement – Tested against steel and aluminum – Chosen based on high strength, light weight, and flexibility – High percentage open area, reducing risk of delamination 6
Construction Three concrete, two reinforcement layers placed in a female foam mold – Two outer layers 1/8” thick, middle layer ¼” thick Strict enforcement of layer thicknesses to reduce overall weight 7
