The Stephenville ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously to call a $60.8 million bond election for May 5, 2018.
WHAT IS A BOND ELECTION? Provide communities an • opportunity to vote to give the Board of Trustees authority to sell bonds to pay for items such as school construction, capital projects, technology, and land acquisition. By law, bonds are not allowed • to be used for general operation budgets or salaries.
STEPHENVILLE ISD BOND HISTORY • SISD’s last bond election: 2012 • Voters approved $24 million with an anticipated 12 cent increase • Due to the Central and Chamberlin renovations coming in under budget, the tax rate was ultimately only increased by 6.5 cents • The SISD Board of Trustees will only raise the I&S tax rate as necessary up to 10.8 cents based on the final costs of the 2018 proposed bond projects. HOMEOWNERS AGE 65 & OVER • Stephenville ISD property taxes for citizens age 65 or older would not be affected by the bond election. • Under state law, the dollar amount of school taxes imposed on the residence homestead of a person 65 years of age or older cannot be increased above the amount paid in the first year after the person turned 65 unless significant improvements are made to the home. • Over 65 Homestead Exemption Application must be filed with local appraisal district.
