THE GARDEN OF GETHSEMANE Mark 14:27-42
QUESTION: What do you do when you are tempted to not obey Jesus?
SCENE 1: Jesus’ Predictions
MARK 14:26-29 After singing psalms, they went out to the Mount of Olives. Then Jesus said to them, “All of you will run away, because it is written: I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered. But after I have been resurrected, I will go ahead of you to Galilee.” Peter told Him, “Even if everyone runs away, I will certainly not!”
MARK 14:30-31 “I assure you,” Jesus said to him, “today, this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times!” But he kept insisting, “If I have to die with You, I will never deny You!” And they all said the same thing.
TWO PREDICTIONS 1. All the disciples will abandon Jesus.
MARK 14:27 Then Jesus said to them, “All of you will run away, because it is written: I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.”

OBSERVATION: The disciples had good intentions, but their good intentions were not enough.
SCENE 2: Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane
MARK 14:32-34 Then they came to a place named Gethsemane, and He told His disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” He took Peter, James, and John with Him, and He began to be deeply distressed and horrified. Then He said to them, “My soul is swallowed up in sorrow —to the point of death. Remain here and stay awake.”
QUESTION: How did Jesus handle the conflict and temptation?
ANSWER: He Prayed
MARK 14:35 Then He went a little farther, fell to the ground, and began to pray.

MARK 14:34-35 Then He said to them, “My soul is swallowed up in sorrow —to the point of death. Remain here and stay awake.” Then He went a little farther, fell to the ground, and began to pray.
PSALM 55:1-4 God, listen to my prayer and do not ignore my plea for help. Pay attention to me and answer me. I am restless and in turmoil with my complaint, because of the enemy’s voice, because of the pressure of the wicked. For they bring down disaster on me and harass me in anger. My heart shudders within me; terrors of death sweep over me.
PSALM 55:5-8 Fear and trembling grip me; horror has overwhelmed me. I said, “If only I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and find rest. How far away I would flee; I would stay in the wilderness. I would hurry to my shelter from the raging wind and the storm.”
PSALM 55:22 Cast your burden on the Lord , and He will sustain you; He will never allow the righteous to be shaken.
WHAT INFLUENCED JESUS’ HONESTY?
He knew God cared.
MARK 14:36 And He said, “Abba, Father!”
ROMANS 8:14-16 All those led by God’s Spirit are God’s sons. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry out, “ Abba , Father!” The Spirit Himself testifies together with our spirit that we are God’s children.
1 PETER 5:6-7 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that He may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your care on Him, because He cares about you.

PHILIPPIANS 4:6 Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.
What did He appeal on the basis of? What was the motivator?

MARK 14:40-42 Once again He went away and prayed, saying the same thing. 40 And He came again and found them sleeping, because they could not keep their eyes open. They did not know what to say to Him. Then He came a third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The time has come. Look, the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. Get up; let’s go! See —My betrayer is near.”
