THE EFFECT OF A 7 WEEK INTERVAL TRAINING BLOCK USING YOYO IR1 MAXIMAL AEROBIC SPEED AS THE INTENSITY MEASURE WITH ELITE FEMALE HOCKEY PLAYERS NATHAN HEANEY
BACKGROUND Background • MAS adapted from vVO2max research by Veronique Billat • MAS established from a field test (YOYO IR1) Validity & Reliability of the YOYO IR1 • 25 Elite & Sub-Elite Netball Players • YOYO IR1 (m) & VO2max (r = 0.953) • vYOYO (0.13 m.s) & vYOYO Equation (0.20 m.s) both overestimate vVO2max • Improved with regression equation including YOYO distance (km) vVO2max = 0.456250 x (distance[km]) + 3.617 444
INTERVENTION MAS established via YOYO IR1 test Intervention Objective = ↑ VO2max • Exercise intensity should be at or near VO2max for as long as possible during bouts of activity (Midgley, 2006). Weeks 1-4 • Increase VO2 • Gradually ↑ intensity via ↑ running velocity • Intensity range = 85 – 110% vYOYO • Conditioning = 3x per week & Weights = 2x per week Weeks 5-7 • Increase VO2 • Increase Repeat Sprint Ability • Gradually ↑ intensity via ↑ running velocity • Intensity range = 105 – 130% vYOYO • Conditioning = 3x per week & Weights = 2x per week

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION MAS established via Beep test YOYO IR1 Typical Error = 54m (Honours Thesis) Kuipers Equation (Kuipers, 1985) • vVO 2max = V + 0.5 * (N / 8) • V = velocity during the next stage • 0.5 = increment in each speed after each level is completed • N = number of shuttle runs completed in the last stage
