Regional Diversity Roundtable • A group of individuals representing various human service sector organizations with a commitment to inclusion, equity, and diversity competence. • Interested in progressing the capacity of individuals & organizations to meet the needs of diverse stakeholders in providing appropriate services to people with diverse identities.

What is the Charter? • First developed in partnership with the Regional Diversity Roundtable (RDR) and the Peel Newcomer Strategy Group (PNSG) • Launched in April 2013, the Charter is a living document created to foster inclusiveness and equity in Peel • First municipal-level initiative of its kind in Canada • The Charter supports the implementation of existing national and provincial legislation at a local level

  6. The Context: Peel Region • The Region of Peel is amongst the most diverse, fastest growing and rapidly changing regions in Canada • This presents many opportunities and challenges

Overview: The D&I Charter Community Engagement and Leadership Initiative • Phase 1 (2012-2013) – Development and Launch of D&I Charter of Peel • Phase 2 (2014-2016) – Charter Implementation in Peel Organizations • Phase 3 (2016-2018) - D&I Charter Community Engagement and Leadership Initiative

Overview: The D&I Charter Community Engagement and Leadership Initiative • Phase 3 (2016-2018) - D&I Charter Community Engagement and Leadership Initiative v Purpose: To make the D&I Charter locally relevant; to engage grassroots communities in ‘living’ the Charter (within their own communities as well as across communities) Ø Year 1 – Widespread community consultations; collaborative translation of the D&I Charter of Peel; project promotion; evaluation Ø Year 2 – Launch of Charter translations; development and launch of Community Ambassador Program (Leadership Training), online/print campaigning, evaluation

  10. Ethno-Linguistic Communities • We will be translating the Charter into 10 non- official languages in addition to working with two additional communities Ø Latin American Ø Accessibility Ø Polish Ø African & Caribbean Ø Punjabi Ø Arabic Ø Tagalog Ø Chinese Ø Tamil Ø Gujarati Ø Urdu Ø Hindi

  13. Community Champions: Understanding Roles and Responsibilities 1. Provide consistent feedback over the course of the project 2. Attend Community Champions Dialogues (approx. 4-6 total, 3 hours each) 3. Attend Community Consultations (at least one champion per consultation ideally) 4. Assist with informal interpretations at community consultations (as necessary) 5. Be aware of/attend community events (as needed) 6. Raise awareness of the project
