Social Inclusion and shared values
Diversity – Social Inclusion. The issue of diversity is not new Democracy requires we take diversity and social inclusion seriously. Democracy requires a symbiotic relationship Influence of the liberal tradition based on equality of opportunity
Equity. A condition or state of fair, inclusive, and respectful treatment of all people. Equity does not mean treating people the same without regard for individual differences.
Equality vs Equity.
Principles of Equity. • Is a foundation of excellence • Meets individual needs • Identifies and eliminates barriers • Promotes a sense of belonging • Involves the broad community
Myth of Equality. Equality of opportunity is sufficient Equality and equity are the same
Equality and Equity are not the same. Equality: • refers to that which can be counted or measured: test scores etc. • focus: equality of opportunity • sameness, one size fits all Equity: • refers to what is most desirable and just • focus: fulfilling different needs • access and resources; equal outcomes
Frameworks from which schools can contribute Multi-culturalism Inter-culturalism Integrative anti-racism (critical multiculturalism)
Points for consideration: Re-constructing inclusion: hospitality and symbiotic rather than one way. Beyond one size fits all Focus on both equality and equity. Inclusivity and excellence go hand in hand Inclusive curricula, pedagogies
Points for consideration: Inclusive forms of assessment: alternative assessments Create two-way dialogue about sensitive issues Make educators aware of differences and how they can deal with differences
Points for consideration: Beyond skills: learning to know, to do, to live together and to be. Problem of “ democratic racism ” Importance of holistic education that recognizes and offers different yet equally valuable pathways to reach different certifications of same value.
