  1. TENNESSEE DEPT OF TRANSPORTION I-40/I-240 INTERCHANGE IMPROVEMENTS

  2. I-40/I-240 INTERCHANGE • Project History  Began Phase II plans - August 2006.  Traffic Analysis for Weaving - December 2006.  Traffic Queue analysis at Covington Pike - May 2007  Revised plans - June 2007  Update technical data for I.M.S. - 2008  Project limits extended - October 2011  Complete ROW plans - October 2012  Construction Plans - Underway

  3. Phase I of project. Added flyover WB I-40 (east) to WB I-240. Added portion of ramp from WB I-40 to WB I- 40 (north)

  4. Phase II-A - Complete ramp structure from WB I-40 (east) to WB I-40 (north). Add ramp from EB I-40 (north) to EB I-40 (east).

  5. Phase II-A - Complete ramp structure from WB I-40 (east) to WB I-40 (north). Add ramp from EB I-40 (north) to EB I-40 (east).

  6. Phase II-B (Now Phase III) – Reconstruct interchange to add through lanes from I-40 (north) to I-240.

  7. Phase II-B (Now Phase III) – Repurpose existing roadways to serve as Collector- Distributor (CD) roads for ramps

  8. Level of Service Traffic Analysis – AM and PM peaks – I-40 east & north – I-240 – Covington Pike – Sam Cooper – All associated ramps

  9. Findings for New “Phase II” and “Phase III” Freeway Sections – I-240 WB & EB unsatisfactory (LOS E or F) by 2016 – I-40 WB (east) unsatisfactory by 2015 – Weaving sections okay but marginal – Ramp Junctions have merge/diverge problems in near future

  10. Current Design Phase II

  11. I-240 Addition of one (1) auxiliary lane on both east and west sides

  12. Widen existing bridge over Greenway

  13. Relocate Ramp from EB I-240 to EB I-40 and widen to three (3) lanes

  14. Widen Ramps from EB I-40 (east) prior to split to four (4) lanes.

  15. I-40 (North) - Widen existing WB I-40 bridge over Summer Avenue

  16. Ramp to be improved and remain open for local access from WB I-40 (east) to Summer Avenue

  17. Ramp from Summer Ave to be relocated east to allow for construction of other ramps

  18. Ramp from WB I-40 (north) to be relocated east to allow for construction of auxiliary lanes

  19. Construct Ramp from EB I-40 (north) to EB I-40 (east) and relocate entrance

  20. Complete Ramp from WB I-40 (east) to WB I-40 (north)

  21. Frontage Road relocated east and access to Summer Avenue relocated east

  22. Sam Cooper Boulevard – Addition of one (1) lane in both the EB and WB directions. Requires a design exception be requested due to substandard shoulder widths.

  23. I-40 (East) - Addition of auxiliary lane EB I-40 from Relocated Ramp to existing lane addition near Sycamore View Road

  24. I-40 (East) -Addition of two (2) auxiliary lane WB

  25. I-40 (East) -Replace Wolf River Bridge.

  26. I-40 (North) - Add two (2) auxiliary lanes from up to Covington Pike Interchange.

  27. I-40 (North) - Replace Covington Pike Bridge to accommodate auxiliary lanes

  28. I-40 (North) - Continue an additional auxiliary lane WB from Covington Pike

  29. Covington Pike Interchange - Widen Covington Pike to allow for dual left turn onto EB I-40 entrance Ramp

  30. I-40/I-240 INTERCHANGE Covington Pike Interchange - Widen EB I-40 entrance Ramp to allow for a dual-left turn lane.

  31. I-40/I-240 INTERCHANGE Covington Pike Interchange - Widen and shift exit ramp EB I-40 to Covington Pike to provide additional queue storage space off I-40.

  32. I-40/I-240 INTERCHANGE Covington Pike Interchange - Widen Ramp from WB I-40 (north) to Covington Pike. Add exclusive right-turn lane and additional queue storage
