The Tennessee Primary Care Association is comprised of 31 health center organizations, with more than 200 service delivery sites located in 70 of the state’s 95 counties. www.tnpca.org
How prevalent is telehealth as a modality for clinical service delivery? • Community health centers in Tennessee are relatively well versed in health information technology. • All are using electronic health records and most engage patients and partners, and submit prescriptions using health IT. • However, in a recent survey conducted by TPCA, only 60% of our rural community health centers reported using telehealth to provide remote clinical care services. www.tnpca.org
How is telehealth used in community health centers? Of the 12 community health centers using telehealth: • 8 use it to communicate with specialists at referral centers • 6 use it to communicate with patients at remote locations (e.g., home or satellite clinic) www.tnpca.org
What types of platforms or services? Of the 12 community health centers using telehealth: • 10 are delivering care in real-time via video conference • 1 is using a mobile health or mHealth platform • 1 is engaged in real-time remote patient monitoring www.tnpca.org
What services are currently provided via telehealth? Services available via telehealth include: • Behavioral health: mental health • Behavioral health: substance use disorder • Dermatology • Chronic conditions • Primary care • Nutrition • Care mobile for school health • Consumer and professional health education www.tnpca.org
Barriers to telehealth adoption and use in community health centers For health centers not currently providing services using telehealth, the following barriers were identified: • Lack of funding for telehealth equipment • Lack of training for telehealth services • Insufficient need • Delayed adoption of telehealth • Unfamiliar with, or have not yet considered, telehealth options • Lack of reimbursement for telehealth services • Belief that the population will not be responsive or accepting • Inadequate broadband/telecommunication service www.tnpca.org
