  10. Overview • My background • A Primer in Unmanned Aerial Systems • Antarctica Basics • UAS in Antarctica • Project Proposal • Bringing It Back to BCIT • Funding Sources • Questions?!

  11. A Bit About Me Instructor in Geomatics Engineering • Department since 2003. Background in the application of • remote sensing to natural hazards. Research in India, Indonesia, • Canadian Rockies and Arctic. Chair SoCE Research Committee • Passionate about photography and • aviation! www.spacehoggraphics.com

  12. UAS Applications

  13. UAS Applications in Geomatics Accurate Representation of Terrain Overlapping Air Photos Terrain and Photos Combined Hundreds of Overlapping Photos! 9,447,475 3-D points to create point cloud

  14. Antarctica Fun Facts

  15. UAS in Antarctica Definitely on the rise, MUCH less intrusive than airplanes & helicopters! • Multi-stage permit process (Environment Canada, Antarctic Treaty & • FAA approvals acquired). Must stay away from concentrations of wildlife, unless permitted to. • Data are being collected on; moss beds, wildlife monitoring (numbers, • size & weight), mapping fuel spills, monitoring sea-ice ahead of ship, geophysical analysis, mapping crevasses and search & rescue. Photogrammetric techniques and an increasing variety of sensors are • being tested and applied by teams from many different countries. Challenges include access, lack of flat ground, STRONG magnetic • declination (100°), COLD temps, high winds and blizzards!

  16. Proposed Project Feasibility study to test two sensors onboard a • small (<1kg) UAS. Parrot Sequoia multi-spectral camera (green, • red, red edge & Near infrared) FLIR Vue Pro thermal camera • DJI Mavic Pro Platinum UAS • Can we accurately map and distinguish • algae/moss growth along coastal areas? Can we detect heat sources under the ice/snow? • Can we detect glacial crevasses? • Provide MUCH needed base-line data. • Bring back a VERY unique dataset to BCIT! •

  17. Back at BCIT Share the experience with faculty, staff and students! • Fully process imagery, derive and analyze results. (Very time consuming!) • Develop Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) manual for UAS image • acquisition missions in Polar Regions. Incorporate materials directly into the following course; FNAM 3460, • SURV 1125, GEOM 3070, 4070, and 8185. Make dataset available to faculty, researchers and students in other • departments. Assess the possibility of a journal publication and/or conference • presentation.

  18. Funding Sources PD Engineering Leave 10.5 (Jan. to Jun. 2018). • Geomatics Engineering Dept. (access to GPS and UAS). • IMF Grant $2,000 (covers flight to/from Ushuaia, Argentina). • TREK Grant $2,000 (partially covers ship expedition costs) • Polar Latitudes sponsorship approx. $10,000 (discounted berth on the ship and • access to staff). Learning & Teaching Framework Grant $5,000 (pending, partially covers ship • expedition costs). Learning and Teach Centre $24,000 (pending, acquisition of sensors and • equipment). OmniView Tech sponsorship approx. $500 (discount on sensors and cameras) • CanDrone sponsorship approx. $350 (discount equipment) •
