If you have difficulty standing or kneeling, it’s completely ok to remain seated. Announcements about events and opportunities within our community are listed in the back of the leaflet, along with contact information for our church. Children - Children and infants are most welcome. We have a children’s program for younger kids that takes place in the Parish Hall during the service. They return to the sanctuary at the time of Communion. Children are also free to stay with you during the service. If your child becomes fussy or your baby is in need of feeding or changing, don’t worry! Our sides person at the back of the church can direct you to the Payton Room, where you can privately care for your baby while still hearing the service through a loudspeaker. Please don’t be embarrassed if your baby cries or your children get fidgety. We understand that children make noise and move around. Holy Communion - Those who have been baptized in any Christian church, including children, are welcome to receive communion. If you have not been baptized yet or do not wish to receive the bread and wine, you are welcome to come to the altar rail for a blessing. Simply cross your hands over your chest to alert the priest you wish to receive a blessing.
Please ensure that your cell phone is turned off or in the mute position. Hymns marked (LEV) are from the hymnal “Lift Every Voice and Sing” Hymns marked (AAH) are from the hymnal “African American Heritage” The Service begins with the blessing of the candles. In silence, the light is passed until all vigil candles are lit. Priest: May the light and peace of Jesus Christ our Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Priest: As we remain standing, let us pray. Almighty and everliving God, you have caused a new light to shine in our hearts in the face of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Through him you give light to the world; by him we are guided on the paths of righteousness. Bless with your Holy Spirit these candles, that when sorrow pierces our hearts as it did the heart of Mary, our Lord’s mother, they may be to us signs of your grace in times of darkness. Enkindle in us the true faith that lead Simeon to recognize you and the holy joy that led Anna to praise your name; + in the name of ther Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. All: Amen. Priest: Jesus Christ is the light of the World. Alleluia! People: A light no darkness can extinguish. Alleluia. Processional Hymn: #5 – “ C HRIST W HOSE G LORY ” All sing Christ whose glory fills the skies, Christ the true, the only light, Sun of Righteousness, arise! Triumph o'er the shades of night: Day – spring from on high, be near; Day – star, in my heart appear. Dark and cheerless is the morn unaccompanied by thee; joyless is the day's return, till thy mercy's beams I see, till they inward light impart, glad my eyes and warm my heart. Visit then this soul of mine, pierce the gloom of sin and grief; fill me, Radiancy divine, scatter all my unbelief; more and more thyself display, shining to the perfect day.
The Gathering of the Community Priest: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. People: And also with you. The Gloria 1. The Proclamation of the Word Please be seated Reader: A Reading from the Book of Malachi. See, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple. The messenger of the covenant in whom you delight - indeed, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts. But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner's fire and like fullers' soap; he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the descendants of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, until they present offerings to the Lord in righteousness. Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the Lord as in the days of old and as in former years. Reader: The word of the Lord. Malachi 3.1-4 People: Thanks be to God. A moment of silence is observed Psalm 24 The choir sings the refrain, all repeat. Please stand Cantor: Lift up your heads, O gates; lift them high, O everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in. “ Who is this king of glory?” “The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord, mighty in battle.” Refrain Cantor: Lift up your heads, O gates; lift them high, O everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in. “Who is he, this King of glory?” “The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory.” Refrain Reader: A Reading from the Letter to the Hebrews. Please be seated Since, therefore, the children share flesh and blood, he himself likewise shared the same things, so that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by the fear of death. For it is clear that he did not come to help angels, but the descendants of Abraham. Therefore he had to become like his brothers and sisters in every respect, so that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make a sacrifice of atonement for the sins of the people. Because he himself was tested by what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested.
