IDM 2017 Recommendations for the GCM GCM should build on existing frameworks and processes 1. GCM should reinforce the value of regional initiatives to 2. improve migration management Ensuring protection of the rights of migrants & enhancing 3. international cooperation - first priorities for the GCM Importance of evidence: long-term, systematic and 4. comprehensive data-collection and analysis Whole of society approach to migration governance 5. Follow-up and review mechanism for GCM 6. Establish and facilitate access to adequate regular 7. migration channels
IDM 2017 Good Practices at Regional Level Abu Dhabi Dialogue consultations January 2017, Colombo focused on (1) promotion and enforcement of fair labour recruitment, (2) certification and development of skills, and (3) leveraging technology, and Information and Communication Technology UAE and the Philippines pilot project on improving recruitment practices The Joint Valletta Action Plan (EU and Africa)- comprehensive approach to managing migration between EU and Africa The Central African Economic and Monetary Community works on protocols for the free movement of people The Intergovernmental Authority on Development - Regional Migration Policy Framework and the regional assessment on the state of play of migration governance and existing coordination mechanisms Khartoum Process (2014)- bilateral and regional cooperation on prevention and fight of human trafficking and smuggling of migrants
Conclusion IDM is a well established platform for advancing international cooperation on and governance of migration gathering all sectors of society involved in migration management IDM to serve GCM also in 2018 and beyond
