Fit for Life: How to improve the health and well-being of 6,000 hospital staff – Virtually!
“We rely on our staff to deliver high quality services for our patients and we must invest in their health and well-being.” Professor Dame Carol Black, Working for a Healthier Tomorrow Review
Working for a Healthier Tomorrow Review / major NHS Staff Survey – High levels of presenteeism – Many staff report significant levels of stress – Most staff believe that their state of health affects patient care
Facts and figures - the daily life of UHSM – We treat around 442,000 patients each year through Inpatients, A&E and Outpatients – The UHSM switchboard receives around 6,000 calls every 24 hours - that is 2.2 million a year – Around 5,500 people work for UHSM (including our partners) – 500 people volunteer for UHSM helping patients with anything from directions to reading.

Considerations – Budget: only £20K available – Facilities: we have no dedicated club or gym onsite – Scope of offer i.e. activities – Engaging with the community – How to tie-in with our Green Hospital agenda
Next steps – Canvassed all staff through e- communications, digital screens, posters etc – Work closely with our joint unions onsite and PFI partners – Pitched for funding from the Staff Lottery – We tied in to the NHS Sport & Activity Challenge (part of the 2012 Olympic offer)
