How are Bilingual Teaching Fellows and Bilingual Paraeducators different? • Roles and responsibilities are similar, but the Bilingual Teaching Fellow will take on greater responsibility in instruction • Bilingual Teaching Fellows are Level 20 on the salary schedule • Bilingual Teaching Fellows will fill vacancies when created by exiting Bilingual Paraeducators
Bilingual Teaching Fellows Program • Western Washington University & Highline Public Schools partnership • Washington State Alternate Route 1 employed paraeducators with a two-year associated degree • 2-year program leads to a Bachelors degree and teaching certificate with elementary, ELL and bilingual education endorsements • Supported by the Alternative Route Block Grant • Forgivable loan scholarship covers most tuition costs • Focus on bilingual education • 16 bilingual teachers of color from the first cohort • 14 future bilingual teachers of color in the second cohort • Recruiting for our third cohort
