NSF TCUP NSF Tribal Colleges and Universities Program Received 3 years funding $1.5 million UNM External Advisory Committee Goals: I. Access to higher education Move students effectively from high school to SIPI Increase access through distance education II. Best strategies to prepare students for careers as scientists and engineers Improve curriculum and course offerings – successful at 4- year institutions Increase student and faculty research capacity
NSF ATE ASEET Project Complementary to NSF funded TCUP VISION 21 PROJECT TCUP – a program for improving science and engineering at the tribal colleges Engineering – provides the impetus for upgrading chemistry, physics and mathematics
SIPI ENGINEERING OBJECTIVES: To prepare Native American students for careers in engineering and engineering technology To make it possible for Native American students to continue on to four-year universities More importantly, work with other tribal colleges
SIPI STRENGTHS Tuition and books exemption for Native American students, as well as, on campus room and board Student populations average 500 per trimester Current student body represents over 100 tribes from across the United States SIPI involves Native American scientists, engineers, technicians, mathematics and science teachers and tribal representatives in its educational Endeavour. Partnerships with technical companies and research laboratories provide opportunities for all participants
