  3. Poll Question Why do you want to incorporate more Why do you want to incorporate more STEM into your summer programming? STEM into your summer programming? a. It’s fun and appealing for kids b. It’s mandatory for our program c. It helps kids develop essential skills d. It helps kids better understand future opportunities e. All of the above

  4. The STEM Connection ● Is a non-profit corporation in Indianapolis aimed at facilitating engaging science, technology, engineering, and math experiences and programming for children and adults. ● Understands the need to engage youth in positive learning experiences that both excite and motivate them, and to empower adults that work with youth. ● Has a desire to connect with all populations and strives to reach those that are underrepresented in STEM careers. ● Believes STEM is fun and everyone can do STEM!

  9. STEM Meaning - Technology ● Technology: echnology: Any tool or machine made by humans to meet a want or need or solve a problem.

  10. STEM Meaning - Engineering ● Engineering: ngineering: Engineers use the engineering design process to solve problems.

  11. STEM Meaning - Math ● Math: ath: STEM specialists use the language of numbers, shapes, and quantities to help communicate.

  12. STEM Practices Science Science Technology Technology Engineering Engineering Math Math Observing Choosing Tools Asking Counting Classifying Using Tools Imagining Comparing Comparing Naming Tools Planning Putting in Order Contrasting Measuring Creating Patterning Researching Scooping Building Measuring Testing Mixing Inventing Calculating Creating Criteria Pouring Predicting Sequencing Collecting Data Creating Testing Reasoning Solving Problems Inventing Modifying Computing Innovating Improving Communicating Inquiring

  13. STEM Scavenger Hunt Challenge Challenge - What STEM-connected items, tools, and materials can you find in the world around you?

  14. Quality STEM Experiences ● Are engaging and hands -on for participants ● Involve problem solving and critical thinking ● Develop teamwork and communication skills ● Help participants work through failure ● Do not have to stand alone - can be incorporated into other subject areas ● Can be done successfully in short amounts of time and with limited resources ● Often incorporate some or all of the Engineering Design Process or Scientific Method

  16. Indiana Afterschool Specialty Standards - STEM Standard 5: Activities inspire and engage youth in STEM Standard 5: Activities inspire and engage youth in STEM learning learning ● 5a: 5a: Activities are fun, hands -on, active, and experiential ● 5b: 5b: Activities are collaborative and use a team -based approach ● 5c: 5c: Youth identify topics and questions of interest ● 5d: 5d: Activities connect to the interests, experiences, and cultures of youth participants ● 5e: 5e: Youth learn how STEM connects to their daily lives and the world ● 5f: 5f: Youth have opportunities to experience STEM learning through projects ● 5g: 5g: Youth have opportunities to practice new skills, present, and showcase their work to guests

  17. Getting Started Start with the curriculum you have and the activities you do: - When, where, and how is STEM addressed? - What STEM practices are being done? - Where can you be m ore intentional about incorporating STEM and STEM practices (or m ore of it/them )? - What additional supports are needed?

  18. Use Literature - Fiction as hook, nonfiction for content - Ada Twist, Scientist , Iggy Peck, Architect , and Rosie Revere, Engineer by Andrea Beaty - Let’ s Read and Learn About Science Series

  19. Use What You Have - Lots of STEM can be done in/with the natural world and with very basic supplies - Consider what opportunities there are in the green spaces you have and using playground equipm ent The picture can't be displayed.

  21. Drop Copter Challenge Challenge Challenge - How can you modify a How can you modify a paper drop copter to improve the paper drop copter to improve the way it falls to the ground? way it falls to the ground?

  22. Drop Copter Challenge ● ASK ASK - How can you modify a paper drop copter to improve how it falls? ● IMAGINE IMAGINE - Explain criteria and constraints and show drop copter. Have the participants imagine possibilities to meet the challenge. ● PLAN PLAN - Generate a list of possible modifications. ● CREATE CREATE- Follow instructions to construct a paper drop copter from template. ● TEST TEST- Hold drop copter in air and drop it. It should spin as it falls to the ground. If not, help participants adjust and retest. Have participants notice speed of spin, speed of fall, and path of fall. ● REFLECT REFLECT - How fast does the copter spin? How fast does the copter fall? How straight is the fall of the copter? ● IMPROVE IMPROVE - Have students make changes to drop copters to improve the spin speed, fall speed, or path of fall. Retest.

  23. Reflection ● Thinking Back Thinking Back - What have you learned today that can be used to impact your program? ● Thinking Forward Thinking Forward - What is your focus moving forward to incorporate more STEM into your program? ● Thinking Inward Thinking Inward - How will the new information from today impact your choices and/or program? ● Thinking Outward Thinking Outward - How will new information from today impact the youth and families you serve?
