Savin’ S’mores: Activity Overview You are a Packaging Engineer! Challenge : Your team of Packaging Engineers needs to design, build, and test packages to protect s’mores as they are transported to the store and ultimately into the consumer’s stomach!
Savin’ S’mores: Supplies ACTIVITY SUPPLIES • • 1-2 Large Marshmallows As needed: • – Masking tape 2-3 Graham Crackers • – Stapler with staples 1 Hershey Chocolate Bar • – Lightweight cardboard cut into a Scissors • couple 3”x 4” pieces Pie Dish or similar sized waterproof – Heavyweight cardboard cut into container filled 3/4 full with water • a couple 3”x4” pieces Paper towels or towel (for clean up – 6” x 4” pieces of aluminum foil, if needed) • wax paper, and plastic wrap Hair blow dryer – 1 Small foam plate cut in half • Tongs or Pencil – Toothpicks • Measuring tape
Activity Guidelines • Part 1: Research | Identify and discuss conditions and events packaged food goes through before getting to the consumer. • Part 2: Development | Build a prototype packaging around your s’more that will be tested to see how it withstands against various conditions and events. Do the activity! (You will now be assigned to a breakout room.)

Reflection Activity: A Storyline • Develop a story about your s’more and the adventure it goes on. • Consider: – Production Process – Packaging Process – Consumer Process – Careers/professionals that were part of that adventure.
Educator Discussion (Breakout Rooms) • Share with the small group your interest in STEM and/or agriculture. • Discuss the following questions and be prepared to report back to the full group: 1. How do you see yourself being able to use this curriculum or select lessons in your classroom setting? 2. MAELC Grants General MAELC Grant Tips -Things are always changing: committee members, amount of money available, number of applicants – Resubmit if necessary -Prefer that MAELC is not the sole funder of the grant; like to see community partners and school commitment -Address project sustainability and justify budget components -Greenhouses: Only fund materials, not the building. No textbooks, student stipends or extended contracts. -Partial grant awards – have been done in the past -Over the last five years, grant awards have ranged from $1,100-$15,000, with the average award amount being $7,000
