  2. Our Mission Springfield Township Parks and Recreation’s mission is to enhance each resident’s quality of life and leisure by providing programs and facilities while being committed to the preservation of our natural environment.

  3. Springfield Township Parks & Recreation  Springfield Township has a population of 14,500 residents  Springfield Township is 36 square miles located 20 minutes on I-75 from either Flint or Pontiac.  The Parks and Recreation Department currently employs: 5 full time employees 1 year round part time employee 2 summer seasonal maintenance staff

  4. Funding  The Department had always been supported solely by a contribution from the Township’s general fund and program revenues.  2010 Budget Revenue: $564,875 Expenditure: $ 564,873 * In 2010 our Department received $ 358,000 from the general fund. The balance of the revenue ($ 206,875) was comprised of grants and program revenues.

  5. Parks and Facilities  Our department successfully manages 5 parks with more than 648.50 acres and the associated facilities. - Green Lake Park - Mill Pond Park (Hart Community Center) - Shultz Park - Shiawassee Basin Preserve - Wilderness Park

  6. Green Lake Park  This wonderful neighborhood park is located on the corner of North Bay and Foster Roads.  This 1.5 acre park is the smallest in the parks system. It also receives a lot of community support.  Some of the amenities include: a playground area, picnic tables with grills, a basketball and a volleyball court.

  7. Hart Community Center  This building is an invaluable asset for our department.  Located within Mill Pond Park, the majority of our programs and events take place here.  This facility is also rented by both private parties and community groups.

  8. Mill Pond Park  This 5.5 acre park is located in downtown Davisburg.  Some of the amenities include: tennis, basketball, sand volleyball and shuffleboard courts; horseshoe pits; a beach; perimeter pathway; accessible fishing pier; playground area; gazebo; pavilion with grills; and restrooms.

  9. Shultz Park  This 18.5 acre park is located at the corner of Davisburg and Dilley Roads.  Its amenities include: a swing set; ball diamonds; restrooms; and a pavilion with grills.

  10. Shiawassee Basin Preserve  Shiawassee Basin Preserve is the largest of the four parks containing 551 acres.  The mowed nature trails are located at both the Eaton and Davisburg Road entrances.  The Davisburg Road entrance contains a pavilion with picnic tables and grills; restrooms; ponds for fishing; ball diamonds; and soccer fields.

  11. Shiawassee Basin Preserve ~ Long Lake Fen Complex  Michigan Natural Features Inventory recognizes the Long Lake fen complex as a globally significant system due to its large size, relatively pristine condition, numerous rare plant and animal species that occur at the site.  The Long Lake Fen spans more than two contiguous miles along the headwaters of the Shiawassee River, making it one of the longest prairie fen complexes in the state.

  18. Wilderness Park  This is the newest park in our system. Acquired in January of 2011.  71.6 acres including a high quality natural resource ecosystem along the headwaters of the Shiawassee River.

  27. Programs  We offer over 35 different community enrichment, youth, adult, senior, dog and safety programs.  We have on average 544 people attending these program per year.  T-ball, Baseball & Softball  For the 2010 season we had 383 children registered for all of the different leagues.

  37. Programs and Events Young At Heart Active Adults ~ This group meets on Thursdays at the Hart Community Center. Nutritional lunches are provided 48 times a year.

  39. Millage Efforts  The millage efforts was lead by our Friends of the Parks group, which formed a Parks Now Committee.  The Parks Now Committee was comprised of approximately 20 very dedicated people.

  41. Millage Efforts  The efforts began 18 months prior to the election. With active involvement 9 months prior.  The Parks Now Committee only had a $2,000 budget for all campaign expenses.

  42. Millage Efforts  Theme for Millage was “Now more than ever.. Our community relies on Springfield Township Parks and Recreation. Now more than ever.. Springfield Township Parks and Recreation needs your support”.  We asked the voters to support a .75 mil. A home valued at $ 200,000 with an assessed value of $100,000 will pay $ 75.00 per year.

Five Successes  Enlisted the help of a friends group to spread the message  Hosted informal presentations to community groups and other boards  Installed yard signs at strategic locations  Printed a mailing to absentee voters  Made 400 personal phone calls to primary voters and park patrons

  44. August 3, 2010 MILLAGE PASSED!!!!  A total of 3,160 votes were cast  Yes votes: 53.61 %  No votes: 46.39 %  The proposal passed in all precincts.  The proposal had more votes cast than any other item on the ballot.

  45. Looking Forward Our Department’s goal is and always will be to provide the very best parks, programs and customer service possible. We continue to strive to strengthen the relationships and partnerships that helped to make this millage a success.
