Waste Management • Greencore philosophy on waste: – Priorities for sustainability in line with waste hierarchy Eliminate Best environmental option for dealing with waste – avoid producing it! Reduce Waste minimisation should be applied to all types of waste Reuse Is there an alternative use for the material? Recycle Conversion of waste materials to re-make raw materials or alternate products Recover Conversion of waste materials into useful energy Dispose The worst environmental option. This should be the last resort!
Waste Management • Inevitably end up with some waste for disposal (mainly food & contaminated packaging) • Currently going to landfill • Challenge to move up the hierarchy • Target zero waste to landfill • Solution = renewable energy from waste food & contaminated packaging • Note – original driver was ABP regs

The Process Waste Collection • Standard collection methods • Process can cope with mixed food and packaging waste • Process can cope with a range of packaging materials including glass • No need to segregate (Note: segregation systems will be maintained to optimise recycling opportunities)
Closing the loop • Once operational Greencore will send virtually zero waste to landfill • Our own waste can be used to provide renewable energy to run our processes • Renewable energy replaces fossil fuels • Increased recycling from difficult wastes (e.g. glass jar of sauce with metal cap) • As network develops – more localised solution for waste recovery and renewable energy
Now for a little more information on the process and the technology…………..
