What is the International Space Apps Challenge? Running annually since 2012, the International Space Apps Challenge is the largest hackathon challenge on the planet bringing coders, designers, entrepreneurs and makers together from across the globe to take on a series of challenges developed by NASA. During the intense 48-hour hackathon, teams will form and produce solutions that leverage NASA’s extensive spacecraft, celestial and science data. Together, we’ll make space and Earth more accessible, visual and fun to explore. Last year, more than 15,000 hackers participated in 61 countries and 161 cities, and created over 1,300 projects .
Hackathons: Marathons for hackers Space Apps Toronto is a hackathon. The event begins Friday evening when hackers form teams and select their challenges. Most work day and night on their solutions that take form as mobile apps, software, robotics, schematics and designs – many of them functional by the end of the weekend. Sunday’s presentations are open to the public, livestreamed to hundreds, and evaluated by a panel of well-known and respected judges.
Why Toronto? Toronto is the “the largest, most dynamic and innovative hub of technology-focused businesses in Canada,” so naturally we led the way for Canadian cities in the International Space Apps Challenge last year.
