EXODUS 20:14 Do not commit adultery.
DEFINITION OF ADULTERY: When you are married and you have sex with someone you are not married to.
General Reason to Obey: Everything God commands is consistent with our good and His glory and He never makes mistakes.
WHY IS ADULTERY WRONG?
1. Adultery is contrary to God’s design for sex.
a. Sex is God’s idea.
GENESIS 2:21-22 21 So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to come over the man, and he slept. God took one of his ribs and closed the flesh at that place. 22 Then the Lord God made the rib He had taken from the man into a woman and brought her to the man.
GENESIS 2:23-25 23 And the man said: This one, at last, is bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh; this one will be called woman, for she was taken from man. 24 This is why a man leaves his father and mother and bonds with his wife, and they become one flesh. 25 Both the man and his wife were naked, yet felt no shame.
b. Sex is a trap by design.

Sex is not a casual event.
2. Adultery crushes the family.
Why does it crush the family?
a. Adultery violates the covenant.
PROVERBS 6:27-29 Can a man embrace fire and his clothes not be burned? 28 Can a man walk on burning coals without scorching his feet? 29 So it is with the one who sleeps with another man’s wife; no one who touches her will go unpunished.
PROVERBS 6:30-32 30 People don’t despise the thief if he steals to satisfy himself when he is hungry. 31 Still, if caught, he must pay seven times as much; he must give up all the wealth in his house. 32 The one who commits adultery lacks sense; whoever does so destroys himself.
PROVERBS 6:33-35 33 He will get a beating and dishonor, and his disgrace will never be removed. 34 For jealousy enrages a husband, and he will show no mercy when he takes revenge. 35 He will not be appeased by anything or be persuaded by lavish gifts.
b. Adultery often leads to divorce.
LEVITICUS 20:10 If a man commits adultery with a married woman — if he commits adultery with his neighbors wife — both the adulterer and the adulteress must be put to death.
c. Adultery hurts children.
3. Adultery confuses the image of God.
EPHESIANS 5:31-33 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. 32 This mystery is profound, but I am talking about Christ and the church. 33 To sum up, each one of you is to love his wife as himself, and the wife is to respect her husband.
