Silhouettes  What is a silhouette?  Definition: a line that traces the outer limits of an object or surface (cartoonists often try to give their characters recognizable silhouettes ).  The term silhouette is well understood now, though this was not always the case. Early designations included "shade," and "profile." Silhouettes were made freehand and with tracing devices, by amateurs and professional artists alike.
