  4. 1. CHANGES TO SENIOR SCHOOLING

  5. Major Changes 1. New QCAA Senior Syllabuses:  Authority and Authority-registered subjects replaced by General and Applied  Fewer formal assessments  State-wide external exams in General subjects  New processes to strengthen the quality and comparability of internal assessment  No QCS test 2. New QCE rules 3. Tertiary Entrance  From 2020 the Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) will replace the Overall Position (OP) as the way to rank students for tertiary entrance  QTAC will calculate students’ ATARs

  8. QCE Rules

  9. Three Types of Credit Completed Core: 1. For General or Applied Subjects to qualify as completed core: • 4 semesters of a subject must be studied , and • Units 3 & 4 must be passed collectively 2. Any completed Certificate II, III or IV qualification

  15. 3. PATHWAYS AND SUBJECTS

  16. QCE Pathways Senior Pathways QCE ATAR QCE PLUS

  17. QCE ATAR Pathway (Red) Mix of SIX (6) subjects that may include: FIVE (5) General Subjects + ONE (1) other OR FOUR (4) General Subjects + ONE (1) Applied subject or ONE (1) Certificate III, IV or Diploma other Why choose this Pathway?  Seeking direct tertiary entrance  18 – 20 hours a week of study  Demonstrated achievement at A/B overall in Year 10  Meet tertiary prerequisites (QTAC My Path)  Adjustment factors applied

  18. QCE PLUS Pathway (Yellow) Mix of SIX (6) General, Applied or VET Subjects Why choose this Pathway?  Other pathways to Tertiary study  Certificate qualifications  TAFE at School  School-based apprentices or Trainees  Work Experience  Community Service

  19. Changes to Subjects

  20. Name Change Examples

  21. Other Important Changes

  22. Which Pathway? Home School Results and Level of demonstrated Maturity ability Level of Test taking commitment Capacity to study Level of Aspirations commitment post school to learning

  23. 4. ASSESSMENT

  24. General Assessment  Only 4 summative assessments per subje ct – a reduction from the present system  3 assessments set by school  1 assessment external – set by state in Weeks 1 – 4 of Term 4 Year 12  Assessment may not be placed at the end of the term

  25. New Syllabus Rigour Greater volume of marks in Analysis and Knowledge Utilisation (Higher Order Thinking)

  26. General Subjects - Assessment Maths/Science Subjects 50% 50% Internal External Instrument Instrument Instrument Task Four One Two Three • External assessment results are added to the total achieved in internal assessments. • External assessments do not ‘scale’ the internal assessment tasks • A student in these subjects will go into the external exam knowing what they have been awarded in internal assessment, however these three assessments will only contribute toward 50% of their overall result • This should be considered by students in their subject selection.

  27. General Subjects Assessment All Other Subjects 75% 25% Internal External Instrument Instrument Instrument Task Four One Two Three • External assessment results are added to the total achieved in internal assessments • External assessments do not ‘scale’ the internal assessment tasks • A student in these subjects will go into the external exam knowing what they have been awarded in internal assessment. A possible 75% of their grade will already be determined • This should be considered by students in their subject selection

  28. Formative and Summative Assessment

  29. 5. VET

  30. VET Options

  31. School Based Traineeship Option

  32. VETiS All senior students in Queensland are eligible for one funded course listed on the Priority Skills List. Students may undertake more than one AQF qualification at school, but should understand the following:  Credits and duplication of learning  Some VET courses at CSHS are incompatible

  34. Grading Changes

  36. 7. TERTIARY ENTRANCE

  37. What is ATAR?

  38. Calculating the ATAR  The ATAR will be calculated by combining a student’s best five subject scaled scores.  Scaled scores will be derived from a student’s subject results as reported to QTAC by the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA), using a process of inter- subject scaling.

  39. ATAR Eligibility

  40. Compulsory Subject

  41. Subject Scaling It is therefore vital that students choose subjects they can do well in.

  42. How Scaling Works For further information about scaling, visit the QTAC website at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7JP35lGLqbw

  43. Sequence of Events

  44. VET for tertiary entrance

  45. VET in the ATAR?

  46. Tertiary Pre-requisites  QTAC is a tertiary prerequisites, assumed knowledge and recommended study guide for Year 10 students each year. This is available from their website from 15 July 2019  Understanding Prerequisites (PDF 65.3KB)

  47. ‘Adjustment’ Factor Schemes  QTAC will administer Adjustment Factor Schemes  Adjustment factors will be added after ATARs are calculated, according to individual tertiary institution rules, when an applicant’s QTAC application is assessed  Additional points on offer for: • Completing a university subject while at school • Studying a second language • Studying Specialist Maths • More advice to come from the universities

  48. Tertiary Entrance

  49. Myth Busting Choosing certain subjects will help my ATAR? • We will not know how subjects scale until after the first cohort has graduated in 2020 • General subjects likely to carry more weight (as opposed to Applied and Certificate subjects) • Students aiming for a competitive ATAR should choose 6 General Subjects • The only way to strengthen a student’s ATAR is performing well in their subject of choice • If you choose a subject that you do not have demonstrated ability in, you are very likely to perform poorly

  50. Comparing the OP with ATAR

  51. Comparing the Systems

  52. 7. SET PLANNING AND SUBJECT SELECTION

  53. What’s a SET Plan? In Year 10, schools work with students and parents to develop a Senior Education and Training (SET) Plan. A SET Plan helps them structure learning in Years 11 & 12 around abilities, interests and ambitions in order to achieve the QCE.

  54. SET Plan Decisions 1. How will I plan to achieve the QCE? 2. What pathway will I choose? 3. What six subjects will I select to support this pathway?

  55. Subject Selection - Rules Select SIX subject choices from the Year 11 2018 “Curriculum Offerings Document”: 1. Select an English subject 2. Select five other subjects These decisions will be based upon: a. Chosen Pathway b. Minimum Recommendations c. QTAC/course pre-requisites Please note that all subjects and certificates will be offered depending upon

  56. QTAC - My Path (online tool) Assists SET Planning to:  choose subjects for senior  determine ATAR eligibility based on subject selection  identify the prerequisites for their intended tertiary program

  57. Consider… Have I demonstrated my ability in this subject?
