  2. A snapshot Year 10 pathways: 1) TOWARDS VCE (Victorian Certificate of Education). VCE is needed if you require an ATAR score to enter tertiary studies. 2) VCAL (Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning). The focus is on hands-on learning. Students are at school 3 days per week, undertake a VET (Vocational Education and Training) course on one day and work placement on another.

  3. Making subject selections You should choose subjects that –  you are interested in  you are good at  you may need for entry into a TAFE or university course  might lead to a job you are interested in  Visit the careers office for further advice

  4. TOWARDS VCE Students complete the following compulsory and elective units:  ENGLISH Semester 1 and 2  MATHEMATICS Semester 1 and 2  SCIENCE/HEALTH & PE Semester 1 and 2  VCE Subject Semester 1 and 2  4 x ELECTIVES Semester 1 or 2  PACE Semester 1 and 2

Year 10 Elective choices All Year 10 students are encouraged to select elective subjects from most, if not all of the following broad Areas of Learning:  The Arts – Studio Art, Media or Visual Communication and Design  Language - Indonesian  Technology – Food Studies or Design technology  Health and Physical Education – Advanced Health and PE  Science  Humanities

TOWARDS VCE The purpose of a VCE subject at year 10 is to:  provide opportunities for students to extend and challenge themselves beyond the subjects offered at Year 10;  stimulate the ongoing development of a culture supportive of striving for excellence;  provide opportunities for students to increase their university entrance scores by completing a program of six VCE studies with study scores;  introduce students to the demands of VCE studies

  7. PACE PROGRAM P ersonal Health A dventure C ommunity E xperience  All year 9 10 students are involved in the PACE program each Wednesday  (period 5). The program offers students with the opportunity to work in small teams in a broad set of learning activities including: - Sport Education classes five weeks prior to term by term interschool sport - A year level camp City Camp in term 2 and essential camp preparation classes - Careers development sessions to develop employability skills, personal interests, resume and cover letter support - An extensive personal, social and community health program in term 3 Personal development workshops delivered by external support agencies such as the Reach Foundation, Tomorrow Man and Rustic Pathways, MPS

  8. VCE course If you select a VCE pathway, you will complete 6 subjects at Year 11 and 5 subjects at Year 12. This must include:  English or  Literature (You may select both English and Literature as part of your VCE course).

  9. Special things to note about VCE  Minimum VCE requirements:  Successfully completing 16 VCE units  Successfully completing 3 units of English  Successfully completing 3 subjects other than English at Unit3/4 level  To gain an ATAR  Must meet the requirements above AND  Must satisfactorily complete BOTH units 3 and 4 English  Must complete SACs, SATs and Examinations  It is a competition and you will need to train hard

Distance Education  Students can apply to complete a subject through Distance Education Victoria: http://www.distance.vic.edu.au/  Students may choose to do this if the subject is not offered or if there is a clash with two of the subjects they select.  There is a payment associated with each subject.  Students will apply to enrol and it is up to students to ensure they keep up with the workload each week or they may be withdrawn from the subject.

  11. Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) The Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) is a senior secondary certificate of education. VET training is a compulsory requirement for completion of VCAL. VCAL aims to provide the skills and knowledge to enable students to make informed choices about pathways. The VCAL is accredited and issued at three award levels:  Foundation (Year 10)  Intermediate  Senior

VCAL program in schools Students undertaking a VCAL program at MESC:  Attend school 3 days a week on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday (strands include Literacy, Numeracy, Personal Development, Work Skills and Food Technology)  Attend a VET course  Undertake a work placement one day a week The assessment of VCAL unit learning outcomes may be in the context of programs that include community, school , work and sports-based projects and/or activities.

  13. Vocational Education and Training (VET) Students can undertake VET as part of a VCE course and must undertake VET  as part of a VCAL course.

Important dates to remember EVENT DATE Year Level Course Information Night Monday 18 th June Course Selection Handbook Published on College Website Monday 28 th June Compass bookings open for Course Counselling Interview - parent Monday 18 th June Introduction to Course Selection and Pathway Assemblies begin this week Monday 25 th June Last day to book Course Counselling Interview - parent Sunday 22 rd July Course Counselling Interviews Monday 23 rd July Subject Allocation published Monday 3 rd Sept(week of) Compass Publication of Levies to families – families are able to pay in full Monday 10 th September or take up the option to pay by 4 equal instalments or payment plans Payment Plans at differing intervals and options available at the office, if Friday 22st September you would like to take this option, please do so by this date Elective Levy Payment due in full Friday 12 th October VET deposits due ($100 non-refundable) Friday 12 th October Jumpstart begins Monday 26 th November VET fees due in full Friday 30 th November
