SCBE 04: Enhancing Environmental Sustainability of Pharmaceutical Solid Dosage Form via Life Cycle Analysis Bian XinRan Ge Wen Xuan
Introduction
Pharmaceutical excipients: -Formulated alongside active ingredient of medication -No medicinal properties
Environmental Sustainability: -Rates of renewable resource harvest, pollution creation and non-renewable resource depletion can be continued indefinitely
Aim / hypothesis ● Aims: Analyse the impacts of excipients involved in solid dosage forms on environment sustainability through LCA ● Hypothesis: Alginic acid is more environmentally sustainable than calcium alginate
Results and Discussion Alginic Acid Calcium Alginate Similarity Manufacture process till before addition of acid or calcium chloride to form each respectively. Waste Difference Waste: ● Filter cake and Finals Filtrate Filter cake and Finals filtrate ● Alkaline wastewater containing ● Resource that can be used which calcium from the calcium are currently met through precipitation and acid from the imports acid conversion step -> Iodine (93-94% present -> pumped out and disposed originally in seaweeds) into sea
Results and Discussion Alginic Acid Calcium Alginate Short Reduces the harm brought about through the reduced production of iodine to meet the same demand Term Long Cause harm to the aquatic More positive effects on environment as increasing the pH Term environment beyond its normal range will cause different extent of the following: killing of adult fish and invertebrate life directly, strip fish of its slime coat and even increase the toxicity of other substances.
Manufacturing of alginic acid is more environmentally friendly than the manufacturing of calcium alginate.
Future Work/ Applications 1.Replace the calcium alginate used as tablet binders in Paracetamol with alginic acid due to its high demand. 2. Further applied to other pharmaceutical solid dosage forms.
Thank you!
