Ross Shaft Refurbishment Project • Ross Shaft spans from the Surface to 5040 feet deep • Constructed in 1930s; Shaft steel is corroded, requires replacemer • Ross Shaft essential for the Lab's future • Hoisting waste rock to the Surface for future Lab expansion • Transporting construction materials and science equipment • Providing long-term safe underground access for science • SDSTA began construction August 2012 (performed in house) • New , modern shaft steel design requiring 1/3 of the original steel design • 4.5 year schedule; Required to keep future experiment schedules on track. $6.SM initial funding provided through T. Denny Sanford gift • • Department of Energy funding 50% of required SDSTA staff each year • Governor Daugaard has requested $2M in one time funds for shaft steel and SDSTA labor to preserve SD's investment in the Lab
