ACCOMPLISHMENTS FY 2009-10 • Conducted approximately 2,000 Defensible Space Inspections on residential properties within the wildland interface zones of San Mateo County and mailed 1,600 self inspection forms to County Fire residences. • Along with CAL FIRE and RCD, developed Countywide Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWWP) approved by the Board in May 2010
ACCOMPLISHMENTS FY 2009-10 • Assisted in the demolition of the old Juvenile Services building – utilized the opportunity as training • With FireSafe San Mateo County, revamped and published updated version of “Living With Fire” for community distribution
ACCOMPLISHMENTS FY 2009-10 • Continued to improve a shaded fuel break in the San Mateo Highlands in cooperation with the Highlands Recreation District, Fire Safe, and CAL FIRE Crews • Continued to Improve the southern fuel break Edgewood Rd west of Hwy 280 & south of the Filoli Estate
ACCOMPLISHMENTS FY 2009-10 Acquired a replacement Rescue Vehicle with patient transport capabilities for the La Honda Fire Brigade
ACCOMPLISHMENTS FY 2009-10 • Assisted The San Mateo County Health Department with the Swine Flu by providing command support and participating in the inoculation of employees with County Fire Paramedics • Volunteer Chief Larry Whitney of the La Honda Fire Brigade recognized as the County Fire honoree at the Peninsula Council of Lion’s Club recognition banquet for his many, many, many years of service

ACCOMPLISHMENTS FY 2009-10 Continue to provide over 2,000 hours of training to career, volunteer, and other agency fire fighters on subjects such as fire control, emergency medical services, hazardous materials, pump operations, and the Incident Command System
ACCOMPLISHMENTS FY 2009-10 • Conducted a hazardous fuel chipping program in La Honda & the San Mateo Highlands.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS FY 2009-10 • Participated as a member in the Countywide ALS JPA – Supervisor Groom appointed as Board representative • Reduced County Fire funded staff by sharing a Division Chief and Battalion Chief (Fire Marshall) with Coastside Fire • Employees at Station 17 (Paul Scannel) Drive remodeled the station’s entry way and created additional workspace

SIGNIFICANT EMERGENCY RELATED ACTIVITIES 2009-10 • 1 st Chemically induced suicide (5/10 – HWY 1 near Bean Hollow) • 28 fire starts at Cuesta La Honda • Participated in 3 County EOC Drills • Complex Vehicle Accident on I-280 that included 3 fatalities and a vegetation fire

CONCLUSION • CAL FIRE – San Mateo County Fire continues to provide a cost effective emergency services program to the citizens and visitors of San Mateo County • Challenges include our aging emergency automotive fleet and fire stations • We project that personnel costs will decrease in FY 10-11 due to the Governor's Employee compensation proposals • We will participate with other fire agencies in opportunities that enhance public safety and fiscal responsibility.
