Why S afe Routes to S chool? 19 6 9 • 50% of children 5 to 14 years of age usually walked or bicycled to school • (National Center for Safe Routes to School, 2011). • 41% of children in grades K–8 lived within one mile of school; * 90 % of these children usually walked or bicycled to school (U.S. Dept of Transportation, 1972).
Walk/ Bike to S chool – 40 years later 20 0 9 • 13% of children 5 to 14 years of age usually walked or bicycled to school (National Center, 2011). • 31% of children in grades K–8 lived within one mile of school; * 35% of these children usually walked or bicycled to school (National Center, 2011).
“The 6 E’s” Education and Encouragem ent v Supporting 75 schools reaching over 20 ,0 0 0 + students! International Walk to School Day on October 5 th had 54 v schools participate countywide. Engineering v SR2S Infrastructure Projects were completed at schools in all 7 cities. Received ATP-2 Grant to improve infrastructure at 7 schools in Benicia and Vallejo. Evaluation v Hand Tally Surveys – 19% of students walk to school in Solano County (National Average is 13%). Enforcem ent v Public Safety Grants (Round 3) with Rio Vista & Suisun City Police Departments were awarded from 2016-2018. Engagem ent v Developed a countywide SR2S Master Plan with each City & School District through local SR2S Community Task Forces. v High School Youth Engagement Pilot Program launched in 2017 with 7 high schools across Solano County

SR2S Program Strategic Goals 1) Safety v Solano County 27 th among 58 counties for fatal/ injury collisions and 4 th among pedestrian collisions (Californ ia OTS 2 014 Collision Rankings) v An average of 44 bicyclists/ 35 pedestrians under 18 are injured/ year (2 013-2015 SWITRS Data) v Align with 2017 Countywide Safety Plan and prioritize program support with schools nearest high collision areas across the County 2) Physical Activity v Perform/ update Walkability Assessments to identify future Infrastructure Projects v Implement Walking School Buses/ WOW Programs in every Solano County school v Work with Physical Education Teachers to lead and promote physical activity before, during and after the school day v Catalyze all PA work happening countywide to showcase how partners are collectively working to improve PA among students

Walking School Bus (WSB) Program v 2012 $500,000 Federal Grant for WSB’s v 2013 - WSB Implementation – 2 Walking School Bus Coordinators hired; Google Map Tool launched and Safe Routes to School Countywide Plan adopted v 2014- 33 routes in 16 elementary schools; v 2015 – ATP 1 Grant awarded - additional 15 schools added; v 2016 – Implementation of WSB/ Walking Programs with more sustainable model (i.e. paid part-time staff). Currently 15 schools participating

Interactive Google Mapping Tool With the new interactive tool parents/school volunteers can: • Look up suggested Safe Routes to School • See the Walking School Bus route(s) for schools across Solano County • Find contact information for Walking School Bus Leader at each school • Draw on the map online to show alternate routes when traveling to and from the school. http://www.solanosr2sroutes.org/
