NDP Chapter 6: Key Points on Rural Development • Rural communities require greater social, economic and political opportunities to overcome poverty; PGDP Goal 1 • To achieve this, agricultural development should introduce a land ‐ reform and job creation / livelihood strategy that ensures rural communities have jobs; PGDP Goal 1 • Ensure quality access to basic services, health care, education and food security; and PGDP Goal 3 & 4 • Plans for rural towns should be tailor ‐ made according to the varying opportunities in each area. PGDP Goal 7 • Intergovernmental relations should be addressed to improve rural governance. PGDP 5 Goal 6

NDP Chapter 6: What Needs to be Done • Agricultural development based on successful land reform, employment creation and strong environmental safeguards; PGDP Goal 1 • Quality basic services, particularly education, health care and public transport; PGDP Goal 3 & 4 • In areas with greater economic potential, industries such as agro ‐ processing, tourism, fisheries (in coastal areas) and small enterprise development should be developed with market support; PGDP Goal 7 6
